Week 3 - A ssig n m en t A pply in g a n E th ic a l T heo ry [W LO : 4 ] [ C LO s: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ] Please r ead these assignment instructions befor e writing your paper as the y contain very pr ecise and specific instructions on both the content and format r equirements. Y ou should download the provided outline and use that to structur e your paper , and also consult the assignment guidance and modeled example for additional help. Finally , before submitting y our assignment please use the checklist to ensur e that you have completed all of the r equir ements. Overview This course has thr ee written assignments that build upon one another and ar e designed to take you step-b y-step through a pr ocess of writing a paper that identifies an ethical question, examines the context, issues, and ar guments surrounding the question, and attempts t o defend an answer t o that question using str ong moral reasoning.
This second written assignment is a four-par t exercise comprised of the following sections:
1. Ethical Question 2. Intr oduction 3. Explanation of the Ethical Theor y 4. Application of the Ethical Theory For sections (1) and (2) r evise and expand on what y ou did in the first assignment.
Sections (3) and (4) are new.
The main purpose of this paper is t o define the nature and scope of the ethical theor y in a way that shows how the core principle(s) of that theor y lead to a specific mor al conclusion on y our ethical question. Another wa y to think of this is t o explain how someone who is fully committed t o the moral reasoning of the ethical theor y would answer your ethical question (e ven if it is not necessarily how y ou would answer the question).
The assignment should be 900 t o 1,000 words, written in essa y form with clearly labeled sections as indicated below , and include a title page and reference page.
Par t 1: Ethical Question State the ethical question beneath this heading. This question should be on the same t opic as the question presented in the week one assignment, and if necessary, r evised based on y our instructor’s comments and the additional insight and information y ou have gained fr om resear ch on the t opic. If you would lik e to switch t opics, you should first consult with y our instructor. Place y our ethical question beneath the P art 1: Ethical Question heading.
Par t 2: Intr oduction Provide an intr oduction to the topic and question. This should be r evised and expanded fr om the Week 1 Introduction in light of y our instructor’s comments and the additional insight and information y ou have gained fr om resear ch on the t opic.
For instance, y ou may find that y our original ideas about the issue ha ve changed and clarified, that the focus of the ethical question has shifted or become mor e specific, and/or that there are impor tant back ground and contextual details that need t o be explained.
The revised intr oduction should r eflect your additional thinking on the scope and significance of the ethical issue, and addr ess any f eedback pr ovided b y your instruct or.
The intr oduction should be at least 300 wor ds in one or two paragraphs. Place the intr oduction material under the P art 2: Intr oduction heading.
Par t 3: Explanation of the Ethical Theor y Ethical theories provide accounts of how t o reason well about mor al questions and of what justifies answers t o those questions. In this section of the paper, you will discuss either the ethical theor y of utilitarianism, deontology, or vir tue ethics.
You should not discuss y our topic in this section, but focus only on the ethical theor y.
The discussion should include the following elements: A brief account of the hist orical background of the theor y and the philosopher(s) associated with it.
An explanation of the cor e moral principle of the theor y, or if ther e is more than one, the principle that y ou will focus on in applying that theory to y our question.
A brief, gener al explanation of how the theor y and its core moral principle applies t o moral questions, using an example diff erent fr om the issue that is the main focus of y our paper. (For example, if y our focus is on how deontology applies t o using animals in medical r esearch, you could explain Kant’ s moral theor y by discussing how it would apply t o an issue like lying for the sak e of the greater good.) This section should focus only on the ethical theor y. F or instance, if y ou are discussing physician-assisted suicide from a utilitarian perspectiv e, this section should only discuss utilitarianism in gener al terms; you should not discuss physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia, or other r elated topics until the next section.
The discussion should be ar ound 300 words and must incorpor ate at least one quote fr om the required resour ces on the ethical theor y you ha ve chosen t o discuss. Requir ed resour ces include the textbook chapter focused on that theory (3, 4, or 5) or the “Primar y Sources” listed at the end of Chapters 3-5. Place this section under the P art 3: Ethical Theor y heading.
Par t 4: A pplication of the Ethical Theor y Now that you have explained in gener al terms the core principle of the ethical theor y you ar e focusing on in this paper , you will apply that theor y and its core principle to your ethical question. Explain as clearly and pr ecisely as you can how that principle leads t o a particular conclusion.
You can think of that conclusion as the answer someone would most lik ely give to y our question if the y were reasoning along the utilitarian, deont ological, or virtue ethics lines y ou explained in P art 3.
Note: This conclusion does not need t o be the same as the position you stated in the Week 1 assignment. In fact, it could be the opposing position y ou discussed there. See the remarks about main purpose of the paper abo ve.
This section should be ar ound 300 words. Place this section under the Part 4: Application of the Ethical Theor y section.
