Internship Final Report
Introduction
My name is Arthur, Based on the requirements of the MPA project, I conducted an internship this summer. The purpose of the internship is to better understand public administration and public management knowledge through work in the public sector. I am very honored to got an internship opportunity from Center for Global Management(CGM) of CSUSB. I have been working at CGM for the whole summer quarter. This internship experience is very meaningful to me. I learned a lot during the internship. In this internship report, I will discuss my work experience. And the goals and objectives set for this internship. It also includes what I have learned to achieve these goals.
work experience
First I would like to thank Jamie Ayala, the manager of Center for Global Management, for giving me the opportunity to do an internship within the department. Also thank the two colleagues in the department, c and S, we working together during the internship. They helped me a lot. Since I learned some information about the Study Abroad program of Center for Global Management in the past, I was very interested in the project of this department, so I decided to practice in CGM. The CGM is within the public institute (CSUSB), it is it is a hub for "advancing global engagement, partnerships & opportunities" in the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration at CSUSB. The programs CGM provided to students include Study Abroad, Global Access Program, Global Ambassador and Global summer program. As a public sector, CGM's contribution to the public interest is that all its programs serve students. the ultimate goal of CGM is to provide students with a better learning opportunity. For example, Global Ambassador program provides opportunities to inspire global mindsets, enhance cultural awareness, build meaningful relationships with peers, and improve global leadership skills. The program encourages students with international interests to volunteer their talents, creativity and time to increase JHBC's collaboration, connectivity and leadership. These programs will be an excellent opportunity to improve the overall quality of students. All of CGM's projects follow Ethical standards, and in any activity we abide by the ethical principles of fairness and respect for others. CGM will substantially guarantee the rights and safety of students during the planning and activities, and develop appropriate emergency response to ensure the protection of students.
Jamie Ayala is my supervisor, she is the Administrative Coordinator of Center for Global Management, she supervises all my work. On the first day of my work Jamie set up an orientation for me. During the orientation Jamie introduced me to the background of CGM and the focus of her work to help me get a better understand the goals and mission of CGM. She also introduced me to the current CGM mission and short-term plan which will help me quickly integrate into current and future work. During the internship, Jamie will arrange a weekly working tasks for me every Monday and I will report her work to her next Monday.
My scope of work covers three projects of CGM. Study Abroad, Global Access Program, and Global summer program. My first task was to consider how to improve the project and change some deficiencies by analyzing past program processes or feedback. My second duty is to participate in projects planning, decision making, management, and adjustment. At the same time, I also focus on the management of the department's social media to provide an effective public outreach for the department.
Study Abroad is a core project of the CGM, Study Abroad Programs are designed to expose CSUSB students to the fascinating aspects, both academically and culturally, of visiting overseas countries. Study abroad courses engage pre-planned lectures and assignments prior to a two week visit In the project. The study abroad program aims to provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about the world while continuing academic education and broaden their horizons. The main job of the project in summer is to organize and analyze the information of past events, and to plan for the study abroad in the fall of 2019. In the summer, there are three groups of students who participate in Study Abroad travel to Ireland, Spain, and Costa Rica. The feedback and information they provided also contributed to our planning for the fall of 2019.
First, I analyzed the previous registration survey form for Studying Abroad, and got some important information, such as the grade level of the students who participated in the program, the countries most interested in the students, and the time students chose to participate in the program. I will sort out the results of the analysis and select the countries that students are most interested in, and these countries will be the key target countries for the 2019 fall plan. And I found that there are fewer graduate students participating in the program, so in the fall of 2019, I marked the outreach of graduate students as highlighted. Next, I analyzed the evaluation questionnaire of the previous study abroad. From the feedback information and data provided by the students, there are also many valuable information, including some dissatisfaction with the students in the study abroad experience, such as courses. , accommodation, catering, and some activities, as well as the students' gains in studying abroad, etc., I organized these information and use them as a reference for planning 2019 Fall to improve the process of the program. In the process of making the plan, I have an additional task. I need to find some partners on the campus that can help us to promote overseas study abroad projects. This will help us to do more publicity at other colleges before the Next event to attract more students. Including World Languages and Literatures and housing Administration, etc. And get in touch with them to discuss whether they can cooperate or help us promote. The work I did was adopted by Jamie. During the planning process, we identified the target countries in the fall of 2019, and found the partners on campus, as well as some settings that need to be changed during the project. Those all included in the planning schedule.
The Global Access Program (GAP) The Global Access Program (GAP), was designed to accelerate the entry of export-ready businesses to global markets. Benefits include customized student research and a half-day conference connecting participants interested in expanding or improving their business with key resources in select countries. We will invite participants from different countries to share their valuable experience in business success. In this project, my work is similar to Study Abroad. First I need to analyze the information and data obtained from Registration Survey and Conference Survey, to analyze the participants' registration information and feedback, to discuss the success of the event and how to optimize it next time. For example, participants are more interested in which country's speeches, participants are more willing to have a one-on-one discussion with representatives of which country, and participants who want to see which field to speak in future event. Those informations and data will be used as a reference for planning the next event. However, during the analysis, I found that the previous Registration Survey and Conference Survey needed to be adjusted. Some existing survey questions could not provide more valuable information, so I re-edited them and added some new questions. The updated Registration Survey and Conference Survey will be used for 2020 GAP.
My next task is to find candidate target companies that are suitable for students to do market research. This work was more challenging because there are many requirements for the company's choice. First and foremost, the company must have a global business. Second, I need to combine the previous Conference Survey to find companies type that are more interesting to students and the country to which their global business belongs. These companies need to be in the Southern California area as this will guarantee the greatest extent that they will be able to participate on the day of the event. Through screening and contacting managers, I finally chose 20 companies as candidates. Of course, in order to attract more participants, I also produced the CSUSB 2020 Global Access Program Market Research Application form and posted it on CGM's social media.
Global Summer Program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students from all majors and all countries. Through this program, we welcome international students from partner universities in other countries to study at CSUSB for two weeks. With instruction provided by the globally recognized Entrepreneurship program in the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, participants will explore the many facets of entrepreneurship, have interesting discussions with faculty and a diverse international student body, participate in experiential learning, and visit local companies and various Southern California tourist attractions.
This summer, CGM welcomed international students from India and Bolivia. On the first day of their arrival, I and Jamie led the international students to visit the CSUSB campus. In the campus tour, we led the students to familiarize themselves with the campus and introduce the role of each department. The next job requires me and other colleagues to help Jamie set up a welcome dinner for international students. This requires us communicated with some departments, such as the apply for the dinner venue with the housing department. Finally, we successfully hosted a welcome dinner for international students. The program set up a two-day visit tour for students. The program set up a two-day visit tour for students. I led them as leaders to carry out the one day Los Angeles tour. During the tour I need to keep in touch with the tour guides and bus drivers, and I need to manage the students and determine the number of students before leaving each sightseeing spot. In addition to this, we also assist Jamie in managing everything that those students studying and leaving in CSUSB. For example, registering a course, passport copy, processing a student card, preparing a project certificate, etc. During these two weeks, we have focused on providing a good learning and life experience for international students in CSUSB and help students solve all problems to achieve the perfect completion of this program. However, when summarizing the project, we found some issues, such as the rejection of visa applications by international students before they arrived in the United States, which caused some students to be unable to arrive. The list provided by the partner school is different from the actual arrival of the student. Inconsistent payment methods lead to the problem of tuition payment and need to check with the financial department. The lack of budget provided to CGM results in only one meal per day for students. Based on these issues, we have discussed the corresponding solutions together in order to make the 2020 Global Summer Program more better.
CGM has been using social media to promote our projects. We promote through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. In addition to daily inspection accidents. I also need to post some update and analyze what kind of information people are more concerned with based on the user's visits and the number of likes, and whether our promotion can achieve the goal. Through observation and analysis, I think that the publicity effect of the existing social media is not satisfactory. I made some suggestions for the department's social media management, such as regularly publishing some short articles about the introduction of departmental programs, in order to let CSUSB Students learn more about the content, benefits and process of those programs. As well as increasing the frequency of postings, post some real-time photos and videos from departmental projects. Collaborate with other departments on social media homepages to help promote each other. Jamie thinks my advice is important and allows me to make these changes while managing social media. I believe these changes will improve the publicity of CGM.
I have set three goals for this internship, I accomplished these goals during this internship. My first goal is: Discuss and apply course materials for the Master of Public Administration program. Through research from students and CGM partners, extract the information and data from the survey results for analysis and evaluation, The results of the analysis and evaluation are used to improve the CGM program, as well as to adjust or improve the center. This work enabled my knowledge gained in PA603 and PA650 to be used. The information and data collected from the CGM project questionnaires are analyzed and evaluated according to basic quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings are used to identify priorities and evaluate programs in public management. Through this work, I also better understand the strategic use of information resources in the public sector. Building a strategic framework for the department through information resources is like improving the CGM project plan through the results of information analysis. This also makes me feel that technology will play an increasingly important role in the management of public organizations and institutions, and can effectively improve the performance of public institutions.
MY second goal is : Learn public administrative and public administration skills (how to become a public executive) through this internship, and learn about this ability by participating in the CGM department's project planning, decision making, management, adjustment and regulation.
My third goal is: Gaining management knowledge compared to other non-profit entities and other government agencies.
