Diversity in Children Literature
Adam, Helen & Harper, Laurie. “Assessing and selecting culturally diverse literature for the classroom.” Practical Literacy: The Early and Primary Years, Vol. 21, no.2, 2016, pp.10-14.
Adam and Harper (p. 11) argue that it is crucial for educators to assess children literature for cultural authenticity before introducing it to learners. They acknowledge a major challenge in children literature whereby most of it is written by individuals from dominant cultures hence bearing stereotypes and prejudice against minority cultures. Through literature review, the author identifies various criteria that can be used to assess the quality of children literature books for cultural diversity (p.14).
The article discusses the issue of diversity in children literature by focusing on accommodating differences in cultural backgrounds while selecting children literature. It shows how to conduct proper selection of literature books. It also discusses the advantages of selecting appropriate materials which promote intercultural awareness and formation of personal identities.
Waters, Katie. “Children books featuring diverse family structures and living arrangements: Recommendation for elementary teachers.” Paper & Publication: Interdisciplinary Journal of Undergraduate Research, Vol. 6, no. 21, 2017, pp. 126-134.
Walters (p.126) argues that most children in the United States do not live in traditional family units. Unfortunately, majority of children literature lacks inclusivity by failing to depict the family situation of each child. As a result, children cannot relate to these books. The author guides educators through various steps that they can use to identify inclusive literature books that are appropriate for their learners by fostering creation of personal identities and facilitating learning (p.130).
This article relates to the topic of diversity in children literature by examining diversity from the aspect of family inclusivity. It shows the advantages of ensuring inclusivity and the difficulties that educators can expect. Additionally, the article offers insight about how educators can navigate these difficulties to select appropriate materials.
