GUIDELINES AND RUBRICFOR WRITING PAPERS IN Bio3562

(See assignment instructions for further information)

The theme for the assignment is Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). STDs affect many individuals and this is a topic of great importance and interest to a wide variety of people. The topic is broad and involves potential sub-topics including assessing the changes in infection rates of various diseases over time/throughout history; how STDs are linked to infertility, other health complications of STDs (specific or general), how STDs are related to each other, biological/social reasons for different infection rates in various parts of the world, effects of STDs (specific/general) on society/communities, success/problems with treatments, success/problems with creation of immunizations, effects on the unborn/neonates etc.

You could choose to look at one disease in great depth or take more of a survey approach providing specific information on a series of different diseases. No matter which area/topic/disease(s) you choose to study, you will need to remember that as you develop your chosen topic that you will need to do so from a biological perspective.

Your essay should have a title page which must include the title of your paper, your name and student number as well as the name of the course, instructor and date. It should NOT be numbered.

write a ~2000+/-200 word (7-8page) essay on some aspect of the topic of STDs. The essay should include some background/history related to the aspect of the topic that you are addressing (this goes in your introduction). It must include a discussion of some of the issues and problems (medical, social, evolutionary, etc.) related to your topic

Use one-inch margins. With the exception of the Literature Cited section which will appear following the last page of your paper, all writing should be double-spaced in a standard 12-point font–Calibri, Times New Roman or Arial, with new paragraphs indented. All pages, aside from the title page, are numbered. In the Literature Cited section a double space is left between the citations. Length ~ 2000 words+/-~ 200 words (~ 7 double-spaced pages) (absolute max 2500 words). Concise language is ALWAYS better.

A critical feature of scientific writing is the method of referencing your literature sources and of listing your references at the end of the paper. Your reference list should include all sources (books, papers, review articles, information from web-based sources, etc.) that you used in the preparation of your essay, listed in alphabetical order by the first author’s last name. To be included in this list, however, the source MUST be specifically cited at least once in the body of your term paper; i.e. this is NOT a bibliography. Each reference is listed only once in the Reference List/Literature Cited Section.

It is essential that your paper contain an introduction, a body and conclusions, that it follows a logical layout for your topic, and that all sections show an understanding of your chosen topic. Do not worry about writing an abstract for your paper. Within your paper you must identify where you found all of your information. After you make a statement, the reference is identified by giving the author’s name and the date of publication, both in brackets (see examples below). Anytime the specific source is used, the same procedure is used in referencing the information.

Some Additional Essay Instructions: Find and read at least 10 or more recent (published since 2008) articles on the topic you will be addressing in your essay. At least 7of these articles must be research articles 5 from the primary literature. ed. A minimum of 7 of your references must be full text primary research articles that must come from recognized scientific journals. They must be full-text research articles from recognized scientific journals. The other sources can include, in addition to recent research articles, older articles, review articles, articles from sources other than recognized scientific journals –including websites, newspapers and magazine.
