HIS 200 (PART 2) ESSAY
The initial reason that led to migration of the Irish people at the time was the great hunger which happened in 1845. This was a dark period for the Irish people which was marked by drought and famine, they were mainly potato farmers. Before the famine, they highly depended on this crop for living but after the drought, their crops failed to mature properly while others even dried off. There were also other diseases that were associated with this famine making the crops to dry off. People sold the remains in their stores for money, when everything was exhausted they began migrating into America. It is important to note that some even died as a result of starvation. (Kennedy, L. (2019)
Those who were heavily affected by this famine were the Irish people. This event affected them heavily such that they had to leave their homeland to a newer place in order to ensure they survived and lived a better life by the end of the day. The major reason that made them to leave is that as I indicated earlier, there were some who had passed away because of hunger and diseases that are associated with the same. The ships were used for transporting these people despite the fact that these were cargo ships, this activity in turn affected America heavily since the Irish people came with diseases to their new immigration destination. There were some people who died in the course of the journey but those who survived either arrived to the coast of New York, Philadelphia or Boston due to the fact that these were the ship’s docking points. (Workman, T. L. (2019).
The highest number of Irish people were famers, meaning that they never had other skills like business. When they arrived in American cities, lives were not very easy as expected. Remember that due to the fact that they never had any skills, they were discriminated by the prospective employers. The other problem is that only few of them had education and no one wanted to employ uneducated individual although some obtained jobs as factory employees which required manual skills. Their salary was little which made them to live in slums and suburbs. The immigration had several consequences to the government of America where, there were new poor people who had arrived and were living in slums. They also came with new diseases. The Irish people were able to participate in manual labors such as building canals, factories and railway lines for cheaper prices which grew American economy, they also helped in fighting the civil wars.
The Irish people tried everything possible so as at least to be engaged somewhere or have a job to do, meaning that they had to participate in all the jobs that were available. They never cared about the amount of salary or the working conditions. This on the other hand in 19th century speeded up the growth of American economy. (Kurtz, W. B. (2019).
In conclusion, I have been able to explain further about reasons why this migration affected the America economy to grow further and faster since there were people available to be paid any amount of money. This activity led to the Irish people being discriminated since they brought about competition to the already existing American laborers. Since they had to lower their costs further in order to be similar to that of Irish people. (Hirota, H. (2020).
