Term 1 Essay: DUE JUNE 11th, 5 PM
For your term 1 essay, you may choose ONE of the following two options:
Using your course materials (textbook and audio lectures), 2 academic journal articles and 2 newspaper articles, write an argumentative essay (5-6) pages that discusses the impact of COVID-19 on impoverished communities in Canada. You may use a particular theory to frame your paper or you may instead choose to discuss different sociological perspectives or concepts operating beneath the issue. When building your argument, consider questions such as:
How have remote learning, business closures, loss of work, access to vaccination or vaccination sites impacted impoverished peoples? How does this reflect or contradict the sociological perspective(s) you have chosen to write about? How might the issue be explained using sociological concepts such as social stratification, social class, socioeconomic status, anomie, and agency?
OR
Using your course materials (textbook and audio lectures), 2 academic journal articles and 2 newspaper articles, write an argumentative essay (5-6) pages that discusses the impact of COVID-19 on children and teenagers in Canada, particularly as it relates to their socialization. You may use a particular theory to frame your paper or you may instead choose to discuss different sociological perspectives or concepts operating beneath the issue. When building your argument, consider questions such as:
How have remote learning, sports, music, and recreation closures impacted the socialization of children and teenagers? How does this reflect or contradict the sociological perspective(s) you have chosen to write about? In what ways have the agents of socialization (family, school, peer group, media) changed?
Instructions:
You are to draw on course materials (textbook and audio lectures) as well as the two academic journals and newspaper articles, to substantiate your main points of discussion. You may use a particular theory to frame your paper or you may instead choose to discuss different sociological concepts operating within the issue. This is not a purely subjective essay based on your own thoughts or experiences. Your arguments must be supported by the materials and properly cited.
• Your assignment will be graded using the rubric. You will be assessed for
comprehension, integration, APA formatting, and spelling and grammar.
• Make sure you use proper citation, including the page number for intext
citations. In your reference list you are to use full APA
citation (see note below).
• Formatting: double-spaced, 12pt font, proper paragraphs, numbered pages, title page and reference list.
