Compare/Contrast Essay, Option 2: Comparing the use of history in two stories
How does O’Henry take inspiration from his past as an outlaw? What lurks in Poe’s background that makes him want to write about madness? How do the events occurring in the world during their lifetimes influence the stories you read this semester?
Instructions: Write an essay in which you compare how your author draws on historical and personal events to make a meaningful point in their stories.
In your essay, you can compare:
what was happening in history at the time the story was written
what happened in the author’s life
Example thesis sentence 1: In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Masque of the Red Death”, Edgar Allan Poe uses sickness, spirits, and madness to explore the anxieties of his time in history.
Example thesis sentence 2: Edgar Allan Poe draws on his own experience as an orphan, an addict, and a social outcast to highlight the importance of loyalty in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Masque of the Red Death”.
