Literacy Autobiography (10%)
Purpose of Assignment
In this assignment, you will be guided to reflect on your past and current literacy practices. The goal is to communicate your literacy autobiographies in such a way that illustrates who you are as literate beings in the digital era of the 21st century.
This assignment is also designed to help you start reflecting on your learning, which will later help you in writing your reflection essays or statements in your Portfolio.
Assignment
This assignment has two requirements. Both products should be submitted through Blackboard for grading.
An Essay (5%) – each student will write an essay (1-2 pages) demonstrating how she became literate in English and in Arabic.
An Audio recording (5%) – each student will record her own narration of how she became literate in English and in Arabic. The recording must be at least 3 minutes in length. This recording is called podcasting.

Objectives

Reflect on what it means to be literate and on the socio-cultural and historical factors that influence our literacy development and literacy practices across our lifespan.
You will be able to record an audio file and write your literacy autobiography.
Review the list of literacy autobiographies of college students from different parts of the world. Such online literacy autobiographies will help you to think of yourselves as readers and writers in different situations: in your homes, in your schools, and etc.
Preparation
For this assignment, develop a list of guiding questions.

Reflecting on your past literacy experiences will help develop an in-depth understanding of the factors, experiences and events that influence the literacy development within your micro-culture.
To help you retrieve and recall your previous and current memories of your literacy practices, consider the following questions. What experiences do you remember that might have influenced your literacy development across your lifespan? How did you manage to be fluent in Arabic and English? Have you been exposed to multimedia oriented literacies (e.g., movies, computer games, etc.) during your childhood? What is the impact of such literacy experiences on the way you view yourself now as a literate being?
Your written and audio products will be evaluated by the instructor according to rubrics (for the written and audio or video part see appendix A).
Appendix A – Grading Rubric for Written Essay
A + (96 - 100)
• The written piece is well organized and well developed. It displays very smooth flow of ideas.
• It shows innovation of ideas and stimulates reflective thinking within the reader.
A (90 – 95)
• It uses details and specific relevant examples to support a clearly defined, focused, and well expressed position. It displays a refined understanding of the likely audience.
• It demonstrates appropriate word choice, syntactic variety, and few, if any, grammatical or mechanical errors.
B + (86-89)
• In general, it is well organized, fully developed, with a sense of the likely audience.
• Effectively addresses some parts of the task more than others.
B (80 – 85)
• It use considerable details and examples to support the position thoughtfully, but less insightfully.
• It contains appropriate word choice and use of language with no more than 5 mechanical errors.
C + (76-79)
• It addresses the topic satisfactorily, but does not provide enough details to support point made.
C (70 – 75)
• It is reasonably organized and developed, but the position of the writer is not stated clearly.
• It contains some errors that occasionally make meaning ambiguous.
D + (66-69)
• It exhibits inadequate organization. It demonstrates lack of consistency and unity among ideas.
• It demonstrates several good details and examples, but it is missing details to support the writer’s point of view.
• It contains inappropriate choice of words. It displays few, if any, transitions
• It exhibits an accumulation of errors in sentence structure in addition to numerous misspelled words
D (60 - 65, no pass)
• It exhibits serious disorganization and lack of unity.
• It does not contain details to support the topic.
• There are serious problems with sentences structure. Numerous sentence fragments and misspellings exist.
F (0 – 59)
• Writing is unfocused, incoherent, undeveloped. The paper is off topic
• It contains consistent writing errors.
• Generally, the assignment has been partially and sloppily completed.
Grading Rubric for Audio Recording
The audio file is in a wav format or mp3 format.
The sound is void of any background, ambient noise, or distracting sounds from other sources.
There are no reverb effects that result from reflections of surrounding objects.
There is no proximity effect which results from bringing the microphone too close to your mouth.
Editing is seamless and imperceptible, and absolutely transparent.
Proper sound effect or proper background music is used if appropriate.
Strong narrative techniques are used with no pauses, stammers, or mistakes.
Clear voice with high vocal quality of enunciation and articulation of the narrative is utilized.
Correct and conversational style is utilized.
