Ethics: Cyber Bullying
Cyberbullying has been a concern for many people from parents and teachers. Even though the extent of cyberbullying cannot be measured, cyber bullying has a longer lifeline than the traditional bullying. Online bullying can take many forms from abusive messages, spreading rumors and private materials among others like impersonation. Some happen to be single incidences meanwhile others happen to be persistent patterns. Cyberbullying can occur regarding griefing which is the art of annoying people online. Usually, those that participate in the activity usually seek to annoy or provoke anger in the victims. Once it continues, it has taken a form of harassment that is punishable by law (Keith, 2005).
Another form of online aggression is drama. This occurs when mostly youths, participate in online arguments over a particular topic or issue. This one happens to be a bit complex as it is hard to trace the victims and perpetrators. It also can become public harassment when the issue becomes persistent. Bullying is often considered as harassment as one person has more power than the other as opposed to drama. Also, online bullying can be seen regarding relationship from online stalking, threats, impersonation on social networks, abusive online messages and also pressurize for sexual photos. Mostly, the dialogue is kept between the perpetrator and target (MediaSmarts, 2017).
Online social media has brought about the issues of ethical business practice concerning bullying. Bullying has become redefined from simple school harassment to harassment in other places. This has made many organizations and even the federal government bring about measures to curb the issue. Currently, there are several laws and programs that are in effect as far as online harassment is concerned. Still, there is more effort needed to curb the problem that is eating away at the society from education to awareness programs (PHYS, 2013).
This means that there should be more adverts on the internet, TV commercials and other platforms to create awareness on the issue and decrease the extent to which the perpetrators exercise the behavior. When people practice dishonest business online, that can be taken as a form of online bullying or cyberbully. It’s incredible to think about how much the new technology meant to bring out development has brought so much unethical behavior amongst the society. Online anonymity presents a better platforms for bullying as they can choose to hide their identity and thus they can torment and harass many people without fear of consequences. Bullying can bring about negative repercussions for both victim and perpetrators (Ruben, 2015).
Most perpetrators end up facing prison time for such behaviors while others face harsher treatments from the public and they may end up developing mental issues. On the other hand, the victims may experience depression, anxiety, loneliness, sleeping disorder, unhappiness, and fear. The amount of emotional distress that online bullying can cause is extensive. It brings about horrible and tragic repercussions from resentment, depression and even suicide. Due to this, the government has started to create a cyberbullying project which involves many countries in a bid to raise awareness, educate people about cyber bullying and look for measures and ways of preventing cyberbullying. Many programs are being constitutionalized and instituted so as to promote campaigns to bring awareness to as many people as possible (Ruben, 2015).
Some of the technology companies like Google have started efforts and campaigns like “stop Cyber-bulling”. There are global hotlines to help stop the activity. It’s also evident that there is a need for digital literacy where digital technology and the know-how of using technology is imparted to the young generation that is getting up to speed with technological development at a very young age. Also, there are many people that conduct online business, and that mass continues to increase. This means that the number of online transactions has also increased. This has brought the question of what is considered as ethical online practice. There are many companies that have taken to acquiring private information on their customers to keep their sales ahead, and they haven’t informed the customers of the same. Such forms of spyware could be considered unethical and maybe even potentially illegal.
This means that it’s important to take charge of how adware and spyware are placed into social media platforms. Such programs among others are being created to stop the spying. There should also be stricter policies that stop false advertising and unethical marketing tactics which represent the dark side of online business practice (Keith, 2005).
