Through a series of readings (novels, biographies, news articles) and films, we will explore historical accounts of the immigrant experience, as well as the current political issues surrounding immigration to the United States, Europe, and the British Commonwealth. The issue of national identity is very much in the news today, so we will look at some of the complexities and problems of integrating traditional values and beliefs into modern – and often fragmented or deeply polarized - societies. The question of assimilation or adherence to native language, religion, and customs, as well as contemporary struggles for equal opportunities and rights under law will also be discussed.
