Gender Reflection
Gender Discussion (Reflection)
In this discussion forum, I invite you to share any additional personal reflections, and more specifically thought provoking questions to pursue the discussion on chapter 1. Your goal is not to merely give back the theories covered in class; instead, you are expected to use your reflection as a way of putting theory into practice and/or connecting the classroom materials to everyday life experience/reality. Please write one personal reflection only of no less than 250 words and no more than 300 words. Your response should be submitted no later than Sunday, June 11th by 10:55 pm. Los Angele Time Zone

In the first chapter, Critical Gender/Sex Lens, DeFrancisco and Palczewski introduced us to a critical approach to the study of gender. They explained how today’s society is shaped by socially constructed views of gender which are based on binary of male/masculine vs. female/femininity to reinforce differences between men and women. In contrast to this binaristic view, they call for attention on the relationship between “intersectionality” and “identity” to conceptualize gender as a continuum and a fluid performance intersecting with other layers of one’s identity (such as race, ethnicity, nationality, etc.) in a multiplicative way rather than an additive way.
