Need in APA format ONLY FOR KIM WOODS
Special instructions:
I need you to do some corrections to this work that was brought to my atention . please correct this isue in the work please
when using the APA format. For example, all titles (books, articles, reports are written in italics
In regards to discussion posts I generally follow the guidelines spelled out in Walden's grading rubric in regards to posts (see the grading rubric outlined in the course information section of blackboard). However, if you do not use APA format or references in at least your initial post, I will deduct at least 5 points for that (so please do that). This is also the same rules for assignments, that they must follow APA style format. Also, in past courses I have been flexible in certain situations regarding delayed or late posts. I do believe that life sometimes gets in the way when we least expect it to. Please know that I would prefer a late post than no post at all. However, I will not accept posts that are more than a week late. If you are not able to post by the required date for whatever reason, just please let me know beforehand. As a rule, however, I do deduct points off the posts if they are late so as to be fair to those who post on time.
In addition, I will be following very closely with Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper with improperly cited passages (or to many cited passages) I will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days).
I have provided an outline of what is specifically required for discussion posts and written assignments in this course:
Discussion Posts:
All posts to all discussions require APA citations and references. Each student is to respond to 2 other students’ posts for every discussion throughout the course. This is the rule for this class; there are discrepancies in this on the Blackboard site. However, going forward, If you post more than 6 response posts by day 5 you will be eligible for 3 points extra participation credit to make up for any lost points (my class rule).
I will be posting on discussions and I am requiring a response from you so please check throughout the week for when respond to your discussion post (usually by day 5)
All initial posts and response posts are due on the days specified on Blackboard (usually Day Three and Five). If your post is late for whatever reason please make sure your posts are posted by Day 7. I am no longer allowed to accept posts after Day 7 as per Walden’s Policy, and any posts. If you know that there is a circumstance that will prevent you for making the post on time or by Day 7, please email me to discuss.
The way a reader (myself and other students) can see that you understand the information, theoretical models, concepts, and words you are discussing is to write about them in your own words as much as possible, tell us what the article authors said by paraphrasing, using your own language. Scholarly does not mean you have to write using multi-syllabic words. Writing a bit like you talk is fine if the reader can understand and if your spelling and grammar are correct.
Read the rubric before and while you write. Let it guide you as to what you write. This is straightforward. In discussion posts you can draft a post in a word document where you have pasted the instructions for each point to be made in the post. You can then write your answer/post right under this instruction and copy and paste the whole thing onto the discussion list. This can help you stay on track.
The idea in discussions is to have as much of a conversation as possible. Notice that the “feedback” rubric score for “excellent” says: RESPONSES --if you fail to respond at all, the grade for feedback is 0 out of 10 points. This does not even consider quality of posts, doing nothing causes a loss of 10 points
CITATIONS AND REFERENCES: Initial posts and the 2 required responses must have citations and references from the professional literature. Using only the case as a reference/cite is NOT sufficient. This is a vignette, it is not research that will back up a claim. Every post should have a claim you are making (e.g. "I think an eco map is good to use here", "Strengths based is best here", "Women in violent relationships often attempt to leave 9 times before leaving for good). You then must have a cite/ref. that backs up this claim, e.g. an article that states eco maps are good to use in situations similar to the case under discussion.
Written Assignments:
Walden University has a strict policy on written assignments, whereas all papers are required to follow APA format. The only exception is that they no longer require a running head on the papers. Most of you already adhere to this format and I have not been as strict in my grading when reviewing your papers on this, but going forward (Week 7 and beyond) I will now follow closely to Walden University requirements and the rubric. The outline for an APA paper is below, and I have attached a sample for your review.
In addition, as I mentioned in my introductory post at the beginning of the quarter. following very closely with Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper with improperly cited passages (or too many cited passages) I will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days).
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
APA Format Outline: In general, your paper should follow these formatting guidelines:
Margin. Although formerly, the required measurement for margins is 1 ½ inch, now, it is required that margins on all sides (top, bottom, left, right) should each just measure one (1) inch.
Font Size and Type. Font for text all throughout the paper should be 12-pt., Times New Roman.
Spacing. Double-space for the whole document, including appendices, footnotes, tables and figures. For spacing after punctuation, space once after commas, colons and semicolons within sentences and space twice after punctuation marks that end sentences.
Text Alignment and Indentation. Alignment should be flush left, or aligned to the left creating uneven right margin.
Active Voice. Traditionally, the APA writing format requires writing in an impersonal form. That is, refraining from using pronouns such as ‘I' or ‘We' in your statements. Now, it has changed. Most disciplines require the active voice. An example of this would be, instead of writing “according to the study,” it should be “according to our study.” This way, papers are made to be as active as possible.
Order of Pages and Pagination. The order of pages should follow this format:
Title Page > Abstract > Body > References > Appendices > Footnotes > Tables > Figures
The page number should appear one inch from the right corner of the paper on the first line of each page. The title page will serve as the Page 1 of your paper.
Title Page
The Title Page should contain the title of your paper, your name as its author (including co-authors), your institutional affiliation/s and author note if applicable. In case there's no institutional affiliation, just indicate your city and state or your city and country instead.
As mentioned earlier, your title page will serve as your Page 1. It should be typed centered on the page. If it requires more than one line, please be reminded to double-space between all lines. Your name appears double-spaced as well, below the paper title.
The author note is where information about the author's departmental affiliation is stated, or acknowledgements of assistance or financial support are made, as well as the mailing address for future correspondence.
Abstract
The Abstract of your paper contains a brief summary of the entirety of your research paper. It usually consists of just 150-250 words, typed in block format. The Abstract begins on a new page, Page 2. All numbers in your Abstract should be typed as digits rather than words, except those that begin a sentence.
Body
The body of your research paper begins on a new page, Page 3. The whole text should be typed flush-left with each paragraph's first line indented 5-7 spaces from the left. Also, avoid hyphenating words at ends of line.
Text Citation and References
Text Citations are important to avoid issues of plagiarism. When documenting source materials, the author/s and date/s of the sources should be cited within the body of the paper. The main principle here is that, all ideas and words of others should be properly and formally acknowledged.
The Reference Section lists all the sources you've previously cited in the body of your research paper. It states the author/s of the source, the material's year of publication, the name or title of the source material, as well as its electronic retrieval information, if these were gathered from the Internet.
Appendices
The Appendix is where unpublished tests or other descriptions of complex equipment or stimulus materials are presented.

The challenge of using the micro practice skills might be asking the right questions and interpretation of what’s being said by the client. Even though I have a lot of experience in counseling there are times when I tend to ask closed-ended questions. As a social worker it is imperative that we ask open-ended questions because this is how we will be able to get the answers or information we need from the client. According to Joyce Robbins (2009) a Professor of Sociology, open-ended interview questions allow conversation to flows in a natural and spontaneous way; the interviewer has the opportunity to ask questions that occur to him or her as the interview proceeds. I believe a way for me to overcome this challenge is to prepare questions that I might have for the client prior to the scheduled interview. If it is a new client I can have a pre-written assessment that has open-ended questions.
Being careful not to prejudge or jump to conclusions about a client based on an initial meeting, in order to get a good interpretation I understand that I have to have more facts. It is almost second natural for humans to judge someone off of first impressions but never judge a book by its cover. In the Army we had a saying “dirt bag”, this was a Soldier who never had a clean uniform or was not the best at PT (physical training). During my first few years I was caught up in that until I got to know some of the Soldiers. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and even though a lot of them was not good in PT they was the best at their jobs. The way I got over this was by getting to know the person as a person and not just as a Soldier; the same can be done for our client. That is why I believe active listen is such a vital skill in this profession. During active listening, you use mirroring techniques to paraphrase and reflect back to a client what he or she has just said, this not only allow you to make sure you are interpreting correctly but it lets the client know that you are paying attention.
Finally the micro skill that can be the worst if not use properly is the confrontation skill. Let’s say you are trying to help a client get a job and you continuously ask for a copy of their resume. Finally you tell the client that they must not really want a job if they will not bring in the resume for you to help them fix. In order to use this skill you must have built a tight rapport with the client are there is a chance this simple confrontation will push them away.
Like I mentioned earlier I believe I will excel at active listen. If military experience teaches anything it is active listening. Another area I believe I will excel at is influencing. Influencing can facilitate changes in a way a client might choose to think or act. This is another area that is based solely off of years as being in varies leadership positions.

Micro skills are the foundational skills in which involves the effectiveness of helping relationships to be built. (Sul Ross State University> education.edu). Some challenges that would come along using the micro skills would have to make sure your not demonstrating nonverbal behavior when working with clients.
Nonverbal behavior is communicating in ways other than spoken, for example facial expression clients are coming to speak with you about their concerns and they don't need you to be making facial expression while their speaking with you, another challenge would have to be asking the wrong question because the client may feel like she or he doesn't need to be asking these type of question. The client may feel like their asking me all these question are they judging me and it can cause problems between you and the client.
Referring back to last week discussion video Eboni and the social worker, when Eboni came in their to speak to her concerning her pregrancy and the social worker made a facial expression such as why and are you sure that your going to have a baby, the question she asked who's the father and what are you going to do.
To overcome these challenges I would have to refer back to my classmate experience, their professor made them look into a mirror so that they can control their facial expression so that they could be able to handle their expression while speaking with their clients. When being a social worker you have to look at the population that your serving and make sure your respecting them so that they can meet their goals that you all had set for the progession of the time you are working togother.
Making sure your putting their needs first and putting your judgemental thought that you could be having.

Empathy as defined in the Social Work Dictionary is “The act of perceiving, understanding, experiencing, and responding to the emotional state and ideas of another person” (Baker, 2003). In the video I believe the social worker should empathy towards both Helen and Stephanie. She did not immediately address the hording or cat situation with Sara but took the time to listen. From Helen point of view the cats are part of her family and the social worker understood that. Also she did not address with Stephanie about running out of the room, from what I could tell she empathized with her because of the way the house was kept, even though she wanted it clean. The social worker understood that they would be living together so she recommended a case manager that could help them set up goals. I believe she showed empathy by displaying understanding of the client's feelings by showing openness through her words, gestures, expression and physical posture. When she went into Stephanie clean room she did not show shock or surprise at the cleanliness, but she did ask to sit down. When Helen picked up the cat and told her how many was living in the apartment once again she was able to keep a professional look. Just like a social worker can pick up on cues of their clients the clients can do the same to them. She also showed Stephanie that she listened earlier about wanting to keep the house clean but did not judge or answer when Stephanie asked her the question about keeping the house clean. To me this was very important because saying yes or no would have been choosing sides. I believe the social worker display excellent skills because she was able to communicate effectively with both women.

Engagement is the first step in the planned change process which focuses on establishing a professional relationship between the worker and the client system. (Kirst-Ashman & Hull pp, 162. The engagement skill that I will be discussing will be, greeting the client that start with the building of a solid relationship with the client, that begins with your fist contact their are recommended behaviors that include personally meeting the client in the waiting room and providing face to face greeting, which includes eye contact and handshake are the common courtesies.(Kadushin & Kadushin, pp.163).
The social worker expressed this engagement skill when she first sat down with the client she formally introuduced herself and extended a handshake to both of the clients, before she stated the reason she was their. She expressed to them who referred her to speak with them, and also she was natural not taken sides. She also had compassion for the clients that she was speaking with, she allowed the mother to give her side of why her daughter was upset with her, she gave boundaries when speaking.
The effectiveness of the social worker is that both clients were respective to what she instructed them to do, after speaking with them they had a better outlook on how one another felt and saw that they really have some underline issues that needs to be addressed so that they can communicate with one another in the proper form and how mother and daughter should treat one another.
In my opinion she used all of the engagment skills because their was a line of respect for the clients because of the way she spoke with them it was like she was listening to their heart in a sense because the mother was collecting things to feel that void of the loss of her husband and the daughter didnt understand why her mother was doing that.

In the state of Illinois currently licenses social workers at two levels: Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). A LSW can be received at a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree level (Bachelor’s degree requires more supervised professional experience). A LCSW can be received at a Master’s or Doctorate degree level. Licenses are renewed every two years. Being licensed by the state of Illinois insures that certain professional benchmarks are met and maintained. This supports the counseling social worker by increasing their social recognition as a vital field. Having a license also benefits the public by making sure that proper counseling is given and ethics kept. The license is meant to recognize specifically Social Workers as opposed to people who have similar skills and techniques but different training. Also many organizations that use federally funded grants require social workers to be licensed in their fields of work in order to receive funds.

In the state of North Carolina, one must complete the requirements of coursework. Also, the individual must meet the hour requirement of practicing in the field of Social Work under supervision. Once all post-degree requirements are met, it is important to take and pass the North Carolina Board exam. The individual must pass the clinical examination in order to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Strengths associated with title protection and licensure would include meeting all requirements of a potential employer. Individuals who have met requirements in supervised fieldwork and successfully passed the state board exam. By meeting these requirements it would make an individual more competitive for a position. Another strength would be having the additional experience to work with the area you desire to benefit. By having more experience, the individual will be the most qualified candidate. In result, the individual would direct the clients they encounter gain access to proper help and resources. One challenge could be potentially having more of a caseload and an increased amount of stress. Another challenge would be if a social worker would like to move to another state and practice, there may be some laws that prevent him or her from doing so.

The social worker in training in scenario 1 was very rude to say the least. He/she could have kindly asked Ms. C if she had talked to her eldest daughter about sex and birth control. Ms. C may feel very strongly against using birth control because of religious or personal reasons and may not want her daughter using them. She may want her daughter to practice abstinence instead or she may feel that her daughter can make her own choice. So I feel as though he/she was trying to tell Ms. C how to raise her daughter. I also feel that it was wrong to say that in front of Ms. C’s children. If the social worker in training was close enough to motion to the 15 year old, she may have overheard him/her and also feel bothered by the remark. The social worker in training is passing judgment to be under the assumption that her daughter is practicing sex at 15 years old.
As me being the experienced social worker in this scenario, I would apologized on behalf of my colleague and take the trainee aside and let him/her know their wrongdoings. He/she may not have meant harm but they need to choose their words wisely and be mindful of others in the room. I would let him/her know how Ms. C was bothered by the remark and request that amends be made.
We have an ethical responsibility to our clients to “understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures. Respect clients' right to privacy. When social workers provide counseling services to families, couples, or groups, social workers should seek agreement among the parties involved concerning each individual's right to confidentiality and obligation to preserve the confidentiality of information shared by others” (Barsky, 2013).

The field of social work is a helping profession. Due to the actions of my colleague it is clear they should consider finding a new profession. How could you be in the field of social work and only want to help certain people? This scenario breaks the core values of social work. For example, calling clients crazy, laughing at them when obviously something is wrong, and not trying to help them only exemplifies incompetency and lack of maturity. The social worker should feel embarrassed and I would too. By not saying anything will let the other social worker think that their actions are okay. I would pull my co-worker to the side and address how inappropriate they were and explain how. I would discuss the core values and pay close attention to the dignity and worth of client. The social worker should have been way more respectful and actually try to help the client address their own needs.

Hello Jameea, Cheraldo & Lexis
You all presented an outstanding and detailed response to your weekly topic concerning social work protection and licensure. I appreciate the hard work you put into researching the topic. Both in-text citations and reference list citations are good. There are just minor corrections to consider when using the APA format. For example, all titles (books, articles, reports are written in italics. I understand that this is a part of the APA learning process. Please see two examples and let me know if you have any questions. One shows how to cite direct quotes but avoid too many quotes in a paper or discussion. Thank you for your active participation in the weekly discussion.
Dr. Samuel
Example 1
As social workers, we must begin to understand the client’s background, beliefs, values, and intentions as we engage our clients and their emotional and social intelligence. It was a good observation concerning the “Latino” culture and beliefs. It also supports the Code of Ethics (1.05 Cultural Competence and Social Diversity) of the National Association of Social Workers (2015) that states social workers should seek education and understanding when working with diverse populations. So, you make a good point and argument in your response to the importance of emotional and social intelligence as they relate to establishing rapport with our clients.

Example 2
The social worker identifies his/her strengths and biases in order to improve his/her skills and in return the social worker assists the client in exploring his/her strengths. This allows the client the opportunity to participate in his/her growth and guide his/her treatment with assistance from the social worker/clinician and it encourages self-worth and self-determination. According to Barker (2014), “self-determination is an ethical principal in social work that recognizes the rights and needs of clients to be free to make their own choices and decisions” (p. 382). In other words, the social worker provides the information and resources as they explain to the client the potential consequences of his/her selected choice/decision. This includes assisting the client in the implementation of the choice/decision. Self-determination plays an important role in the helping relationship. Thank you for your interesting summaries of social intelligence.
