Part A – Mini project report submission on 6.5.2018

Part B – Presentation on speed study starting from first week

of April

Aim

To acquire a wider knowledge about the real-world

transportation problems by undertaking real time projects.

Learning Outcomes

To acquire knowledge on basic traffic characteristics and

real-time traffic issues that affect transportation in any

network including accidents.

To suggest design alternatives to the various horizontal and

vertical alignment elements of a highway based on the

study.

Task(s) :

Part A: Road safety evaluation for a selected highway in Muscat.

Introduction:

Working in a team will provide students to break individual barriers and reach newer heights. For carrying out this group project, four students can form a team and carry out investigation and gather information through suitable data collection methods as detailed below. Data collection methods can be chosen based on literature review on related topics. Once the data collection is done, they are required to prepare and submit a detailed report. A viva voce will be conducted after the report submission.

Suggested methodology for the study:

  1. Before start of the project, a thorough literature review should be done to gain knowledge about road safety evaluation procedures and requirements. (Chapter 2 of the report should show an extensive literature review)

  1. Based on literature review students should come up with a road safety audit form and a detailed methodology for the project.(Chapter 3 of the report should show the detailed methodology for the study)

  1. Select any one highway in Oman.

  1. For the selected highway, they have to conduct a road safety evaluation and come up with possible defects which may be probable causes of accidents (Lack of sign boards, Too less or too much information, road condition, lighting, speed limits imposed, time

1

required to take decisions, non-uniformity of road geometry and the like). If required questionnaire surveys of the road users can be conducted.

  1. The group should come up with a detailed plan with drawings for rectification of identified defects on the selected road.

  1. Visits to the concerned Ministry or Municipality is recommended to collect the information related to accidents, the black spots on selected road and other related information.

  1. Photographs, Drawings, field studies, accident reports, or excel analysis should form part of the report.

  1. Final evaluation is based on report. (Report guidelines in Appendix)

Format for report:

Guidelines for the mini-project report and the marking rubrics can be downloaded from the Blackboard along with other required instructions. The cover page will be uploaded in the blackboard which has to be attached as the first page of the word document.

Part B : Evaluation of existing speed limits in Muscat based on field study.

  1. For a selected stretch of road, students need to conduct speed studies covering peak and non-peak hours. (Necessary input on conducting speed studies will be provided during lectures. Necessary permission from concerned authorities to conduct the study need to be obtained prior to the study. An induction will be given about safety during field data collection)

  1. An analysis of the data need to be done and the 85th percentile speed to be determined for the selected stretch.

  1. A comparison with the posted speed limit to be made and suitable recommendations to be provided.

  1. The outcome of this work will be assessed by a power point presentation.
