  1. What roles do the adults or older figures play in the lives of the various narrators? Select a figure from each of the four memoirs and write one sentence answering the question for each memoir.

Answer:

Well, in “A Cub Pilot” Mr. Bixby taught Samuel Clemens to never doubt himself, to believe in himself and not to let

anyone take that confidence away from him ever. Mr. Bixby, taught Samuel that he does have knowledge of the

river and what he is doing. In “Barrio Boy Excerpt”, Miss Ryan, inspired him and his classmates to learn the

language, she encouraged them and not to give up on learning English. In “No Gumption”, Russell's mother gets

him to “make something of” himself. She encourages him to never stop giving up, to always “try, try again”. In “I

Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, the book states that her mom took her away to visit St. Louis, and that around

the age of ten Marguerite returns, “withdrawn and silent”. Mrs. Flowers comes into her life and helps her to come

out of that withdrawn and silence.

  1. All of the memoirs in this unit are told from the first-person point of view. Why is it important that they are told in the first person? How would they be different if they were told from a different point of view? Imagine one of the memoirs you read told from a different point of view, and use that example to explain both the benefits of telling the story
in the first person and how it would be different if told from another point of view.

Answer:

I feel that it is important to have memoirs told in first-person, because it wouldn't make the

story as unique or inspiring. The author is telling it like it happened and whenever you read it is

easier to put yourself in their place of the story, as if you were the one in the story and that

  1. Select one of the memoirs from this unit and explain its theme. Support your answer with at least one example from the story that illustrates the theme.

Answer:

In “Barrio Boy”, the theme is being accepted by society. The main character in the memoir

didn't know English, but his teacher was able to help him and his classmates to learn English.

Now he feels accepted by society, and that is all because of his teacher.

  1. Which narrator do you think faces the most significant conflict? What is the conflict that the narrator faces? Is it resolved satisfactorily? Why or why not? Use details from the story to support your answer.

Answer:

I feel like Ernesto Galarza is the one that faces the most significant. I feel his was the most significant because he

started this new school and came into this country not knowing our language. I know if it were me in that situation

that I would be terrified. It was resolved satisfactorily, because his teacher helped him and his classmates learn

English.
