Argument Assignment #3

Question: Do social network sites make us more or less socially isolated?

You will need to use at least 5 sources for this argument assignment. Your argument should contain the following elements (in this order):

Paragraph 1:

  • Overview and background to the topic.  Enough information should be provided so that the reader knows where your assertion statement is coming from. This may take 3-5 sentences.  Be sure to cite any sources you use to give this background information.

  • The last sentence of your first paragraph should be your assertion statement. Once you have read quite a bit on this topic, you will need to decide whether the evidence indicates that social network sites make us more or less socially isolated, or whether it is unclear at this point.

Paragraph 2 (can be two paragraphs if needed):

  • Present your evidence that supports your assertion. You can decide how many articles to use. Each piece of evidence should be from different scientific articles. They need to be from the primary literature (research studies, not review articles or book chapters or news articles or dissertations or theses).

  • Present evidence that either counters your assertion, or makes the story more complicated. Again, you get to choose how many articles to present here. This evidence should be from the primary literature.

Last paragraph:

  • A restatement of your assertion. Example: “Taken together, the research presented above suggests that social networking influences our levels of social isolation negatively/positively”

  • A discussion of areas for future research. You have just reviewed quite a bit of literature on this topic. So, what questions come to mind, BASED on the papers you have discussed in the previous paragraphs? It can start like this: “Future research should examine…….”, and detail WHY this is an important next question.

Smaller details

  • This argument should flow seamlessly, and should be approximately three or four paragraphs in length.

  • Do not use any direct quotes. All work should be in your own words. If you quote material you will lose points.

  • Citations should be used for all evidence presented, as well as any other facts or information you discuss from your research. NEW TASK: When you cite the articles in you argument, I would like you to also include the page # from which you are gotten the information (e.g. (McCormack et al., 2006, p.42)

  • The sources for your evidence should be from the primary literature. Talk to me if you are unclear about what this is.

  • Submit your argument paper to Moodle and me. In addition, please submit all of your supporting articles to Moodle (in it’s own assignment). Attach the entire articles—not a list of links. You will receive a zero on this assignment if you fail to attach full copies of your sources)

  • Your paper should be APA style.  Please include an APA style cover page, argument, and APA style references (all sources cited in your argument should be in the Reference section. No source should be in your References if it was not cited in your paper.)

  • Refer to your APA manual for guidance on the formatting of this paper.

  • You are to complete this assignment independently.
