Discussion Prompts and Class Assessment Tasks (CATs)

Each module has specific learning objectives, linked to the overall course objective.  There are two types of discussion prompts, as noted in the syllabus – short CATs (250 words, one question), and long CATs (200 words x 3 questions = 600 words). For all CATs, a critical comment of 100 words is also required. All assignments are due either on Saturday midnight or Wednesday midnight.

In the written assignments, make sure to include:

- Open with a strong thesis statement that makes a clear, provocative claim in response to the inquiry question. It is uniquely your claim about the text, not just parroting authors.

- Use supporting evidence such as facts or examples. It is better to use 2-3 good examples, rather than a list of unanalyzed details or mere text summary.

- Use reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence

- Use stylistic or persuasive elements to add power to the ideas expressed.

- Build your thesis in a way that persuades an audience.
