Task 1

Jane is a fifteen-year-old girl who has to juggle daily challenges that occurs at the adolescence stage. It is vital to note that adolescence is a transitional stage that comes between childhood and adulthood. This stage of life gives teenagers a chance to improve on their dietary status and make a change to previous poor nutrition practices (Fulghesu, 2018). The adolescence stage is a sensitive stage and one needs to abide by healthy dietary practices. However, adolescents live carefree lifestyles and do not comply with healthy nutritional practices that would be beneficial to their growth. Most experts recommend dietary supplements with the intention of meeting the nutrition requirements of adolescents even if he or she is pregnant, or athletic (Fulghesu, 2018). Adolescents need to eat a balanced diet that contains all the nutrients needed for growth and maintenance of energy supply or it could result to many problems. Normally, the adolescence stage requires a larger supply of energy to cater to the dietary needs of the adolescents. The changes that their body go through at this stage require many nutrients.

Nutrition issues affecting individuals in the adolescence state include:

  • Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa

  • Obesity

  • Poor diet

Task 2

Common cold is a viral infection that affects the nose and throat. In other words, it affects the upper part of the respiratory system. Generally, it does not raise any alarms and naturally goes away after a while. An average adolescent has two to three infections of common cold annually. They lead to absenteeism from learning institutions. Rhinoviruses are usually present in the air and exist as small droplets. If rhinoviruses enter into adolescents nose through the defensive lining, it can cause a hyper-reaction and the immune system fights back. The defensive mechanism of the immune system manifests as a headache, sore throats and stuffy nose. In most adolescents, first symptom is a tickle within the throat region, before turning into a running nose and occasional sneezing (Fulghesu, 2018).

Anthropometric

Anthropometric evaluation of Jane reveals that she has a healthy body mass index of 18.5, which means she is healthy. The fact that Jane has a healthy BMI does not exempt her from dietary evaluations and weight management.

Biochemical evaluation:

The laboratory tests revealed germs in the mucus and nasal area of the nose. Stuffy nose and coughing were some of the physical symptoms exhibited by Jane. The symptoms lasted for ten days without any sign of improvement and worsen over time.

Clinical examination

The clinical examination keenly evaluated the symptoms and noted the presence of watery eyes and mucous discharge from the nose. Each symptom was absent, either present or moderate. The conclusion was that she suffered from severe form of common cold. Thus, all the symptoms were severe (Fulghesu, 2018).

Nutrient drugs and herb required to improve Jane’s condition

Astragalus is a Chinese herb that cures common cold by improving overall immune system. In addition, it clears the blood system and renews energy in a patient. The strengthening of immune system usually improves metabolism within the immune cells (Fulghesu, 2018).

List of common medications

  • Antihistamines (Gives nasal relief when a person has nasal congestion)

  • Aspirin, is used to relieve mild to moderate pain from conditions such as headaches and common cold

  • Expectorants (Helps reduce mucous and decongestion)

Taking aspirin with other NSAIDs can result in stomach/intestinal bleeding and ulcers. Also, taking anti-histamine with other anti-histamines or antipsychotics can cause drowsiness.

Jane is from a simple African-American community. She is a student who works part time at an restaurant to cater for some of her needs. Thus, she has a chance to meet her dietary needs and supplement them if any need arises.
