Subject: Outlawing Controlled Substances and Growth of the Black Market

The black market is rumored to be equal or more significant than most legal markets with regards to market capitalization. Some figures claim that the current value of the globe’s black markets stands at 1.98 trillion dollars. However, the secret nature of the market makes it hard to ascertain its real worth. The constant boom of the black market and black market trade is attributed fact to the legislation put in place for the moderation of controlled services.

I have no idea what black market is. I will start by defining black market in the simplest terms. Black market is some type of illegal trading of services or goods that cannot satisfy demand due to scarcity or heavy taxation. A market is termed “black market” mainly because of three reasons;

  1. The illegal structure of the transaction.

  2. The illegal nature of services or goods sold.

  3. The illegal structure of transaction as well as illegal nature of services or goods being transacted.

The transactions performed in these black markets are unrecorded. People trade services or goods in the black markets because they want to evade taxation of illegal goods or services. Some participate in black market trade because they are unaware that there are laws they are not adhering to. For instance, many people hire housekeepers but do not realize they are meant to pay employment taxes. Another reason is licensing restrictions imposed by the government on a many occupations forcing some workers to opt for black markets because of the money and time required to obtain the required licenses.

The argument over whether an outlawing controlled substances leads to the growth of the black market is a long-standing one. This measure which aimed at deterring the use of controlled substances has associations with the constant growth of the black market. Several factors can be attributed to the boom and expansion of the black market as we shall cover throughout this report.

The outlawing of controlled substances has led to the boom of the black market for some reasons:

  • Controlled substance scarcity - The scarcity of controlled substances leads to higher demand for these substances.

  • Increased market privacies - The black market network provides more privacy as compared to legal markets.

  • High profits - Black market trade is highly profitable.

Here, I provide subheadings for the reason such as controlled substance scarcity, increased market privacies, and high profits. These shortened subheadings can enable a reader to easily and quickly get a glimpse of the reasons. The explanation that follows the subheadings enhances understanding.
