Weekly Discussion Grading Rubric

The chart below explains how discussion posts will be graded. A post must range from 200 to 400 words. Two points will be docked for failing to provide a substantial response to another student’s post.

10 points

  • All of the attributes that will earn a student eight or nine points also apply to a five-point score.

  • In addition, ten point answers show a creative and thoughtful approach to the question at hand.

8-9 points

  • The student shows understanding of the significant ideas relevant to the issue under discussion. This is indicated by correct use of terminology, precise selection of the pieces of information required to make a point, correct and appropriate use of examples or counterexamples, and explanations that are concise and to the point.

  • The student backs up their assertions with well explained evidence from the sources.

  • Information is accurate.

6-7 points

  • The student shows that they completed the reading and expresses their ideas fairly clearly, but the reader may need to make some guesses or inferences to determine exactly what the student meant.

  • Assertions are generally supported by some facts or analogies but the answer lacks evidence from the primary sources.

  • Some vocabulary or terminology may not be used correctly.

  • Ideas are correct but not concise.

4-5 points

  • The response shows that the student may not have read the assignment completely or carefully.

  • Assertions are made but no evidence is offered to back them up.

  • The post may be too poorly written to be easily understood.

0 points

  • Either no post is made or the post contains no attempt to make an intellectual contribution to the discussion.
