The Impact of Parental Involvement on Students Achievement in Mathematics: A Literature Review

When parents become involved, children do better in school, and they go to better schools.” Anne T. Henderson

In recent years, the Jordanian Ministry of Education (MOE) has launched a parental involvement initiative in collaboration with the United States’ Agency for International Development (USAID). However, MOE lack of strategies to involve parents in their kids learning. I worked in MOE as a mathematics teacher for five years, a very few parents communicated with the school during this period. Moreover, less research has been done in Jordan about parent involvement and students achievement. To the best of my knowledge, there are only two studies were conducted in Jordan that examines the relationship between parental involvement and student achievement.

It is widely recognized that parental involvement plays an important role in the promotion of students achievement overall the world. Research efforts showed that the more parents are involved in their children's learning, the more beneficial is the achievement impact. Therefore, parental involvement is considered as a major cornerstone of educational initiatives. Moreover, three decades of research have demonstrated that parent involvement significantly contributes in a variety of ways to improve student outcomes in mathematics.

Parent involvement that has been investigated in research includes telephone and written home-school communications, attending school functions, parents serving as classroom volunteers, parent-teacher conferences, homework assistance/tutoring, home educational enrichment, and parent involvement in decision making and other aspects of school governance (Cotton & Wikelund, 1989). Researchers focused on a variety of student outcome areas, including general achievement; achievement in reading, or math.

Our review of scholarship on the relationship between parents involvement and students achievement should inform policy maker and curriculum developers in Jordan about various strategies such as evening workshops, parents attended instructional sessions to learn about effective parent involvement, parent-teacher conferences that are already being implemented and proven successful in increasing parental involvement levels. Researchers must continue to conduct research in Jordan in order to promote healthy relationship between students’ achievement and their parental involvement.
