BITS 211 Project Specifications

Project Scope (Proposal)

You are creating an Excel workbook, using specific features and tools we learn throughout the course, that represents a business scenario of your own choice.

The business you select could be: Your place of employment, a friend or relatives business, a business you've always wanted to investigate/research/own, a home business, or a former employment experience. The selection can NOT be a home/personal budget.

If you're stumped please address this in the CCP Proposal Discussion Forum.

The business scenario must be large enough in scope to be able to include the requirements from the rubric (summarized below). The scenario will need to be a comprehensive compilation of data. Two proposal examples are provided to get you thinking in the right direction.

Example 1:  Classroom

Data Sets:  Students, Grades, Attendance

Students (25): First Name, Last Name, Student #, etc.

Graded Work:  Quizzes (5), Assignments (8), Tests (3)

Gradebook Worksheet: Student + Graded Assignments

Attendance:  Student, Date, Y/N

Example 2: Business Inventory

Data Sets: Products, Customers, Orders

Products (25): Product Number, Product Name, Description, List Price, Qty, etc.

Customers (15):  Customer Number, Customer Name, Customer Address, Phone, etc.

Order Form/Worksheet: Customer Information + Products ordered / Qty ordered

Take this opportunity to choose your own topic for your project and pick something that will be interesting to you. Hopefully if it's interesting, it will also be fun to work on it, and will add value for your career, future plans, etc.

You may need to expand on your original idea in order to meet all the requirements of the project.  The point of the proposal is that you establish a reasonable topic, and then you will iron out the details as you go.

Project Design

Note: Be sure to use the BITS 211 Project Starter File to begin your project!

Documentation Sheet: Complete the Documentation sheet to record student information. State the spreadsheet purpose and the type of data on the documentation sheet.

  • Hyperlinks will be created to the specific sheets (and back to the Documentation worksheet) with cell references to identify the location of each formula/ calculation or component that is required.

  • A thorough explanation is required for each component included in the workbook (i.e. How does this component add value to your workbook or solve a business question).

The remaining project requirements should be created on additional worksheets as needed. (You will add these to your starter file.)

  • A minimum of two worksheets of data (this is the data you will use to begin your project), properly formatted to enhance the appearance and standardize the overall theme and look of the project.

  • Four formulas or functions (including one IF statement—this can be any type of logical-IF function excluding IFERROR)

(Note: Lookup functions are separate from these four formulas.)

  • A filtered list (to be put on a separate sheet).

  • Conditional formatting (with explanation of purpose on the documentation sheet)

  • Two different types of charts (Pivot Chart is a separate requirement) representing different data, attractively formatted to show logical comparisons; grades will be based on readability and sensible choice of chart type

  • A lookup table with corresponding lookup function

  • Data validation with a corresponding error message

  • Pivot table with a pivot chart

  • One of the following items:

    • One variable data table

    • Goal-seek application

  • Two of the following items:

    • Macro

    • Two variable data table

    • Scenario Manager

    • Solver

Project Submission

The electronic file, containing all above specifications, must be submitted for assessment purposes to your instructor at the time of the due date. Please refer to your instructor’s guidelines for submissions. Electronic review is the best way to confirm accurate formulas, skills application, and appropriate logical methods.

Scoring

Points are awarded for accuracy, creativity, logical approach, reasonable application, and adherence to instructions. See the rubric for item by item point values..
