Original Question

Choose a leadership style. Draft three questions that would help you engage with an executive who has that leadership style. Why are those questions appropriate for that leadership style? How do the questions encourage reflection?

Answer Number 1 (Karie)

I value the Servant Leadership style of leadership. It places a focus on others before self (Gregoire & Arendt, 2014). I have seen it implemented effectively. While my experiences with this type of effective implementation have been in the religious setting where leaders are volunteers and are in an environment where individuals operate on shared values, I understand how this style can prove to be highly effective. When engaging with clients who reflect the Servant Leadership style, it is important to consider their understanding, background, experiences, and motivators for using this type of leadership style. The following are three questions I would engage a client in.

What motivated/motivates you to use this style?

What is the value of implementing this style?

What is the intended outcome of using this style?

Questions reflect a past, present, future format. By doing this one can look for patterns present throughout the answers. Patterns in answers help to solidify congruity and consistency. It encourages a client to walk through their personal experiences, reflecting on their role in the formation/use of their preferred style. Questions are written in a general style not identifying a specific leadership type, allowing for reuse as a template and would be appropriate for any leadership style.

Answer Number 2 (John)

They leadership style I chose is the autocratic leadership style. I chose this style because it is probably the hardest one to work with. When dealing with someone with this style can be a pain, but Anne Fisher from Fortune magazine says that avoiding surprises with autocratic bosses will save a person the headache and autocratic managers hate surprises.

The three questions that I will ask an autocratic manager would be:

What do you plan to gain from utilizing a coach, and how can your team help you achieve this goal?

This question will get the leader thinking about his team. What I have known about dictators is they only think about themselves but getting them to think about others is the first step.

Being a great boo is all about how about the team and

making sure they are happy and performing to the best of their ability.

What is the moral like with your team and how can we improve moral and performance?

This is a self-explanatory question. What do your staff think about you and why?

What are some things that you can improve personally and professionally that will not only make your personal life better but also your professional life easier and more efficient?

This is to get the client thinking about ways to change and eliminate some of the stress he is putting on himself and the team.
