Wicked Investigative Report

Purpose: To conduct an investigation about a wicked sustainability problem in your field and develop multiple perspectives about how it may be resolved.

Worth = 300 points (30% of course grade)

How to: You are an investigative reporter, responsible for examining a wicked sustainability problem associated with industry practice in your field. You will need to conduct in-depth research to gather as much information as you can about a specific problem. Then, you will use this research to complete a focused, current-state analysis. You will begin this process through a series of class activities, and then flesh the full report out on your own.

For interiors students:

 _Waste: Excess building demolition (landfill)

 _Waste: Premature disposal of furniture, fixtures, or fittings (landfill)

 _E_n_e_r_g_y_ _c_o_n_s_u_m_p_t_i_o_n_ _o_f_ _b_u_i_l_d_i_n_g_s_ _(_c_o_m_m_e_r_c_i_a_l_ _o_r_ _r_e_s_i_d_e_n_t_i_a_l_)_ _

 _Environmental impact of a particular material type

 _Human welfare/well-being and the built environment

You will complete Activities 2-3 (see instructions) to complete the remainder of this report as outline below.

2. There are three major components to this report, which we will begin drafting (and have instructions for) in class:

I. Problem definition (see Activity 2 directions)

II. Explanation of why your problem is wicked across the six characteristics (supported with research cited and referenced) (see Activity 3 directions)

III. A discussion of multiple perspectives about problem resolution:

a. You have been exposed to a variety of perspectives on how some wicked sustainability problems could be resolved, who should be responsible, and what actions should be taken to realize a solution. Now, it is time to step back from your research process about your chosen problem and develop multiple perspectives about resolution. It may be helpful to think about how the various stakeholders’ values, goals, norms, etc. color their perspective about problem resolution. These three perspectives are your own ideas.

b. This portion of your report should discuss in a conversational style at least three different perspectives about how this wicked problem could be resolved and who should provide leadership in resolving it. Ensure your arguments are stated clearly in the first sentence of each paragraph of each perspective, then follow that with supporting points. This discussion should appear at the end of your report.

2. Compiling your final Wicked Investigative Report. It is highly recommended to following the outline below:

a. Problem statement

b. 6 characteristics of a wicked problem (subtitles) with explanation, including in-text citations to support throughout

c. Personal reflection of multiple perspectives

d. Reference list

How to submit your report:

Submit a Word.doc file including all four components to the designated Brightspace dropbox by the deadline noted on the course agenda.

Research Expectations

There is a lot of information available in the Library and Internet about sustainability problems, some of which is not very credible. Often, it is difficult to evaluate the credibility of your sources. A representative from the Library will visit during class to provide guidance on how to examine your sources, as only highly credible sources should be included in your report. Also, reference your Activity 2 instructions as a guide.

Using sources such as blogs, consumer websites, wikipedia, dictionary.com, ask.com, answers.com, etc. will not be accepted and will result in a project grade of “0.”
