Server Side Technology

After much thought on the requirements for this project, it is my intent to use an open source LAMP stack system as a platform for this project. I have decided to use a LAMP stack after considering the advantages of having a combination of open source solutions which would not only make it easy on our budget but would provide us with a lot of features that we can use in completing this project.

Our LAMP stack system will be made up of Linux for the operating system, Apache for the web server, MySQL for the database, and PHP for the application programming language. I have decided to use Linux because it is the most widely used open source operating system (wikipedia.org) and its ability to support browser applications in mobile devices (Android) which is prevalent nowadays. I’m using Apache because it is once again, an open source and was designed to handle modern operating systems plus it is one of the most popular web servers on the internet since 1996 (apache.org). MySQL is chosen for our database because it is cost-effective, widely used, and well-supported. And compared to other systems, MySQL seems to be much easier to learn which would equate to a lot of savings for the company because lee time will be spent on training users. With PHP as our application programming language, it will enable us to include interactive features like e-mail forms, shopping carts that save previous orders and recommend similar products (about.com) the next time you use the website. It can also provide for forums and messaging applications. And PHP can also work interchangeably with HTML.

With the system being an open source, costs will be more on development which would include the team members rates times the length of time it would take to complete the project which I estimate to be at eight weeks. For hardware, we will be using the company’s server hardware since it still has a tremendous capacity left in it. The team for this project will be made up of a project manager, art director, designer, art production specialist, html production specialist, programmer, copywriter, and quality assurance. My initial assessment of costs being broken down per team member would be the following:

Position

Cost ($)

Project manager

12,000

Art Director

4,000

Designer

1,800

Art Production Specialist

1,000

Html Production Specialist

4,000

Programmer

2,000

Copywriter

2,600

Quality Assurance

700

TOTAL

$ 28,100

It is the intent of this assessment to provide a general view of the project and the costs that would be associated with it. A more concise assessment will be provided in the coming days as my analysis of all the information regarding the project comes into full view.
