Virtual Field Trip Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to explore in detail one marine environment or specific area. You can choose an estuary or portion of an estuary, beach, nearshore environment or a specific area in the deep ocean basin. Since this is an online class, the virtual field trip is your opportunity to experience the marine environment. Have fun with this assignment. You have a lot of freedom in format and choice of subject matter. Choose an area that interests you and a format that is comfortable.

Topic and Format Guidelines

  • Choose your area or environment. The area must have a name. Do not choose “abyssal plain”, choose a region or a location such as Blake Basin. Other examples of specific locations include a particular beach such as Stump Pass Beach or part of an estuary such as Charlotte Harbor. The Panhandle of Florida is a region. You must be specific in your focus for the assignment.

  • Choose a format for the assignment. There are some virtual field trips listed under the “Links” section in PAL so you can see some examples. PowerPoint is always a good format. If you are comfortable with other formats, please feel free to use them. Check with your professor to be sure the format is acceptable.

Virtual Field Trip Requirements

  • Title slide with field trip name, your name, professor’s name, and date is required

  • First slide should introduce area and include name of area as well as longitude and latitude and directions to your site from two directions so someone could find the place if they wanted to visit.

  • Describe the setting including

-topographic features

-tectonic and geologic setting

-predominant marine, physical process such as influence of waves, tides, currents, wind (as applicable), temperature variation or stability

-be sure to describe if the dominant marine processes include erosion or deposition of sediment

-any relevant seasonal processes or changes

-any relevant or dominant climatic influences

-environmental sensitivity and human influences

-any economic importance of the area

-any features or facts you find interesting

  • You can use photos and video available on the internet. If you live near the coast, visit, or have visited areas that you want to use as your field trip subject, you can use your own photos and video.

  • Be sure to include descriptive text for all slides or images. Bulleted text is always a good format for PowerPoint. Remember that “less is more” on a PowerPoint slide. It is better to have more slides with less text in PowerPoint. Remember that you, as the author of the PowerPoint, understand what you are looking at, but someone else may not understand what he or she are looking at so be sure your descriptive text is clear and concise.

  • Be sure you always cite your sources and include the URLs for video and photos – This is very important. Be sure to include in-text citations where necessary.

  • Use 2 to 3 sources excluding Wikipedia. Your textbook is a source.

  • Include a “References” slide at the end of your presentation

  • Be sure to include a “Conclusions” slide (s)

  • Be neat, complete, label everything that should be labeled, always cite your sources, check your spelling/grammar, and follow the directions given here.
