Introduction

Today, E-Commerce related organizations are more focused on enhancing the current uptake of the emerging internet of things technological aspect in order to improve market presence as well as to absorb the expanding online purchasing market base. Interestingly, the dynamic conversion of physical business related buyers and sellers scenario into online related environments has resulted into e-commerce business scenarios which are also impacted by the rise of mobile device applicability. Thus, innovative techniques which can allow desktops ecommerce websites to be converted into mobile device web applications provide opportunities for electronic business transaction that can uplift an organization’s business level to higher heights (Flewelling, 2018).

In this paper, the discussion will based on how the previously discussed business pertaining to home improvement store’s e-Commerce Website can utilize mobile devices such as smart-phones and tablets, and institute an approach that can be optimized to extend the e-Commerce effort to include mobile devices.  In the first place, the home improvement store require to rapidly re-design its ecommerce website in order to deliver mobile device-based web application features that allow improved customer experiences or mobile device ecommerce actions optimization as well as consider relative business value aspects such as monetary value points, performance, and product improvement scenarios.

Strategies on calculating relative value points and monetary value points

The most instrumental or notable strategies on calculating relative value points and monetary value points include consideration of project value, feature optimization, and story value. The only way to be able to calculate relative value points and monetary value points needs to prioritize project value, feature value, and story value aspects because they help to establish gaps that in return support to specify the current market values against untapped market values, present risks from unrealized opportunities, and future return on investment values.

In the first place, market value is pertains to how the new feature or product will support to improve total sales while the risk reduction is concern with how the new product will minimize the drawbacks associated with the initial product technical or operation frameworks. On the other hand, return on investment pertain to the total cost of developing the new product against the revenue to be assumed from the new product.

Thus, it is appropriate to state that the first notable strategy pertain to project value and it entails the overall value of the planned mobile device friendly ecommerce website. It includes value points such as financial return on investment, speed to market, improved quality, and business operations. On the other hand, the second strategy should involve feature value and which is the relative value of each intended ecommerce feature. The features of the mobile friendly ecommerce website include links to social network marketing, payment options, menu navigation, and user-based customization or prioritization of user preferences among other features. Feature value should be estimated based on specific values of each feature. Finally, story value the quantity of feature value delivered by each story and where each feature is distributed into stories which are delivered in 1 week time.

Risks and mitigation

The most notable risks associated with developing mobile device based ecommerce websites relate to embedding user experience, content layout, responsiveness, and context. In fact, mobile-specific sites need to have satisfactory user experience and it is impossible to totally embed this because mobile device websites appearances are different from desktop-based website. Thus, the risks that arise from developing mobile device specific websites include limited user experience, conflict due to different development approaches, and crashing objectives. This is due to the fact that most developers try to match the desktop experience and features.

However, there mitigation strategies that can be applied so as to alienate this risks and they include defining business objectives, consideration of the end-user, and prioritizing operation-needed features or components. These three mitigation strategies support in transferring the most needed operation features to the mobile device as well as allowing the mobile device based platform to enhance user experience (Nygard, 2018).

An example of maintenance stories

Stories are usually allotted cost value estimates in terms of story points and in this case, it is imperative to also apportion business value estimates and benefit points as well as epics and stories. A mobile device based website development project should estimate stories cost and business value in relation to the ecommerce website business case with project objectives such as impact goals or effect goals been widely considered. For example, objectives for mobile device ecommerce website development project for an organization which offer home improvement products through desktop frameworks could as follows;

  • Objective 1: Increase market presence to 57%

  • Objective 2: Improve online-business continuity plan by 31 %

  • Objective 3: Increase sales by 43%

From the above example, it is imperative to state that the predicted figures pertaining to improved revenue and market presence inform that the project should progress as the maintenance stories indicate less cost when compared to achieve benefits.

Example of performance cards

Examples of performance cards related to mobile device friendly websites include successful purchase, social promotion, and completed tasks. Purchase performance card should illustrate if a visitor is able to successfully complete a transaction while social promotion is determined by how a visitor is able to link with social media to share, follow, or suggest a product or brand as well as review and subscribe to the organization’s social media pages. On the other hand, the provided mobile device based website features should also be included in the performance card and the aspects which should be examined must pertain to completing a task in each feature such as entering numerous items in one purchasing catalogue or cart as it is commonly referred in the ecommerce sector (Nader-Rezvani, 2018).

Conclusion

In conclusion, innovative techniques which can allow desktops ecommerce websites to be converted into mobile device web applications provide opportunities for electronic business transaction that can uplift an organization’s business level to higher heights. Developing mobile device friendly ecommerce projects is not an easy task as it present various risks such as those associated with user experience. Therefore, it is imperative to calculate relative value points and monetary value points pertaining to overall project value, feature value, and story value. This helps in prioritization of features and overall objectives.

Typically, maintenance stories and performance card are key to establishing quality and user friendly mobile device based websites. It is imperative to set goals that can be applied to track and measure success in terms of limiting over-designing and improving user experience. Another important strategy is to define business objectives, consideration of the end-user, and prioritizing operation-needed features or components.
