According to the PowerPoint included in your learning resources, some types of counselors do not have to be licensed to provide counseling and counseling-like services such as Christian Science Practitioners –practicing in the boundaries of religious doctrine, Pastoral Counselors, State or Federal Employees, School Counselors-as long as they are certified by the states’ Department of Education, Hypnotists and Substance abuse treatment personnel (Alcohol Anonymous Meetings).
Why are these types of professionals permitted to work without licensure? What does the field say about the services they provide and how they differ from the services provided by licensed professionals? Do you believe they should be licensed or should the profession remain as it is?

Your PowerPoints discussed the differences in the professions in the "Helping Fields" i.e. (social work, psychiatry, counseling, religious practitioners, etc.). Is it necessary for each field to have its own ethical guidelines, principles, and standards? or should we all follow one set of guidelines? Why or Why not? Why do we need all these different types of professionals in the helping fields?

Vignette: Dr. Lastlap thought he would help his patient, an unemployed automechanic diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder, to ease the financial burden of psychotherapy. The doctor raced cars as a hobby, and one of his older race cars needed a new transmission. Because his patient had the skills to replace it and had offered his skills in auto repair on more than one occasion in exchange for psychotherapy, Dr. Lastlap agreed to the bartering arrangement. The risk seemed minimal, and Dr. Lastlap thought that he courd keep the professional boundaries clear.
His patient was highly enthusiastic about the idea and was much relieved that he could now afford additional sessions of therapy in this fashion. He worked on the car after hours in his friend's shop, successfully installed the new transmission and returned the car to his theapist several days later.
The next weekend, while driving on the highway on the way to the race track, the transmission overheated and suddenly failed, causing Dr. Lastlap to swerve off the road into a ditch. On inspection, it appeard that the new problem was due to an oversight on the part of the patient. Dr. Lastlap suffered head and neck injuries, which required medical treatment and physical therapy over a period of several months.
He was in constant pain and began harboring such negative feelings toward his patient that he could no longer effectively treat him. Dr. Lastlap finally terminated therapy at the very time his patient wished to process his emotional reactions to the role he felt he played in the accident, primarily feelings of guilt and apprehension that he would lose his therapist.
After therapy ended, the patient felt abandoned by Dr. Lastlap and was somewhat fearful of entering therapy again with someone else. Originally, he thought that his idea of bartering automotive skills in exchange for therapy was a good one, and he was very pleased that his therapist had agreed with him. He had never engaed in such an exchange of services before with a health care provider and the possibility of any negative consequences never occurred to him. The patient's symptoms increased as time passed.
