The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality inventory is to make theory of psychological types understandable and useful in everyday lives. The crux of the theory is that there is actually order and consistency instead of the random variation in the behavior. The identification and description of the 16 distinctive personality types result from the interactions among the preferences.

There are four main pairs of the MBTI assessment, E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P. The first pair involves Extraversion and Introversion. Extraversion and Introversion explain different attitudes people use to direct their energy. Extraversion takes energy from active involvement and being around people. Introversion like getting energy from reflecting on the ideas, pictures, memories, and reactions inside his/her inner world. Introverts prefer doing things alone or with one or two people. The second pair consists of Sensing and Intuition. Someone who pays more attention to information that comes in through the five senses is using sensing, while someone who pays more attention to the patterns and possibilities that you see in the information you receive uses intuition more. The third pair compromises of Thinking and Feeling. Putting more weight on objective principles and impersonal facts involves thinking, while putting more weight on personal concerns and the people involve feeling. The fourth pair involves how one likes to live his/her outer life. One who prefers a more structured and decided lifestyle is judging, while a more flexible and adaptable lifestyle is perceiving. This preference may also be thought of as orientation to the outer world.

I am an ESTJ, which is an Extrovert, Sensing, Thinking Judging person. I am a logical thinker, organizer, practical, responsible, take charge person.

I believe knowing my type preference enables me to realize my areas of difference from my client. I am aware of how our preferences can interact and make sure I am not result oriented or a task master.

Based on the booklet by Peter Myers and Katherine Myers titled "Introduction to Myers Briggs Type: A Guide to Understanding Your Results on the MBTI Assessment," which I was given after I did the assessment last month the MBTI’s four main pairs and the differences of each are as follows:

1. E/I- represents Extraversion and Introversion which is the preference of an individual’s way if receiving energy. Extravert does not mean “talkative” but rather that the person learns best by doing or discussing things. As well as with Introvert does not mean “shy” instead like to direct their energy and attention inward and learn best by reflection.

2. S/N refers to Sensing and Intuition and these pair relate to how one take in information. Individuals with sensing are people who focus on factual and concrete, building carefully towards conclusions. Those characterized with intuition like to take in information by seeing the big picture and seeing new possibilities.

3. T/F preference pair enlists those individuals characterized from Thinking and Feeling. And no Feeling does not represent “emotions” here as it does in everyday situations. It is being empathic by striving to understand the impact of decisions and bring about harmony and positive interactions. On the other hand, Thinking people logically look at consequences using cause-and -effect.

4. J/P preference represents Judging and Perceiving people who approach the world from the outside. This is way Judging individuals organize their lives and keep short- and long-term plans. Whereas, those that have a more perceiving perspective view rather live open-ended like having things loose and flexible.

Last month I did this assessment and my preferences were Extraversion, iNtuition, Thinking, Judging. Which fits me good as I do readily take on leadership roles in most situations that I find myself in. I do have the unique ability to notice inefficient procedures and want to help solve problems find complex solutions. I enjoy goal-setting and am usually adequately informed, so equipped with these natural abilities and acquired skills will can translate then into my coaching alliance with my client to conceive desired outcomes. My natural readiness to lead and organize will set a standard to guide the client achieve short- or long-term objectives, so that he/she can move in the right direction.
