Sustainability Video Project Task Description

Part 1: Observation that you notice at home, in your neighborhood or your city at large regarding a sustainability issue – for example food, water, energy, paper, electronic or plastic waste.

Sewage water is becoming one of the major issues for the residents of International City, Dubai. The causes of this issue are numerous and unfortunately, avoidance and negligence are at the peak from the government officials [1]. Among the various reasons for this issue, the first and foremost is the old pipeline which has broken from many sides due to which sewage water comes out and spreads in the streets. Secondly, the less awareness among people how to keep their sewage transmission uninterrupted by avoiding to throw different types of plastic and other solid waste in the sewage water pipelines. This lack of awareness causes sewage transmission lines blocked resulting in dirty water suppresses into the streets [2, 4].

Mr. Pinto, a resident told during the interview that the community experienced a solid smell that caused them unable to breathe. “Usually the smell of gas due to open windows swings in the evening and keeps disturbing us till morning till we close them,” Mr. Pinto added.

The streets are also full of waste material and when it rains this waste material goes into the sewage water pipelines and blocks them. It not only disturbs the movement of the people but also has adverse effects on the environment and the local economy. People living in the locality sometimes do not care about the garbage which they throw unintentionally in the streets and in the sewage water pipelines of their houses. They do not bother to throw the waste material in their respective places. Even some streets do not have the sewage water pipelines and their wastewater combines with other pipes and causes sustainability issues.

Part 2: Analyses of the factors that are leading or impacting this issue.

Sewage water is the issue not only in the developing countries but also in the developed countries. Government planning is a major factor due to which this issue arises. The populations of any locality increase with the passage of time but the sewage water pipelines used by added residents remain the same. In addition, the newly constructed streets do not have separate sewage water pipelines and disposal holes. Their pipelines connect with the older pipes and cause the overflow of sewage water. There must be a proper town planning which covers the spreading of sewage water system as the population of a locality increases but unfortunately, there is no solid planning accordingly [3].

Less awareness of the residents is another factor which promotes this issue. Most people become lethargic or negligent while dumping their waste to the proper place. They throw solid waste and other recyclable material in the sewage water pipelines without noticing their adverse effects. A typical UAE resident on an average consumes around 2 Kgs of plastic bags and 450 plastic water bottles yearly [5].

Due to the insertion of waste material in the sewage water, it becomes polluted and causes sustainability problems not only for residents but also for the whole country. Another factor which is responsible for this issue is the strategy to handle the overflow water. Some areas use the disposal machines which carry the water to the dumping sites or treatment plants but if they are not available it will be not good for the sustainability of lives.

Part 3: The extent and consequences of this problem in terms of the three pillars of sustainability (effects on the environment, people and the economy) at different levels; personal, local, national or even global. You need to include some relevant statistics – for example the amount of waste produced per capita, etc.

The effects of sewage water are very dangerous not only for the surrounding environment but also for the global environment. A study reveals that a family of five persons can produce 180 gallons of sewerage water per day. This water is treated properly will facilitate 1000 people [6] but unfortunately, it is not happening in the international city. Carbon monoxide and ethane gases develop from the sewage water which enters into the surrounding air and causes severe diseases such as cancer, inhalation, and other lungs diseases. There is a threat that the surrounding environment of International City will become sick and keep inhaling a typical smell. When this water goes into the rivers and nearby lakes the sustainability of aquatic habitat will be on high risk and they will either die or extinct [7].

Raghu a local medical storekeeper revealed that some of the residents living in Persian cluster were reportedly found to several harmful diseases like asthma, malaria, tuberculosis, and typhoid because of the sewage water suppression in the streets. The economic activity of that will also disturb because the illness of people restricts them to perform their jobs or business efficiently. When sewage water pollutes the nearby lakes and water reservoirs the fishes and other beneficial aquatic animals die due to the poisoning of water and the economic activities of related people is also affected. The sustainability of economic activities of people like fisherman and traders of aquatic animals will be endangered because of less availability of fishes and beneficial aquatic animals.
