Keywords: Leadership concepts, management concepts, Christian leadership

Today’s organizations it is essential to establish between who is a manager and who is a leader, recognizing the difference in character positions between a manager and a leader will avoid incorrect assumptions for what is expected from each position.  According to (Liberty University Custom), “We are living in an age where the public believes that within the last presidential election most of the country was conflicted within the last two major political forces.  According to the poll, Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School, 70% of Americans believe that the country is lacking and is in demand of strong leaders within the country.”  (Liberty University Custom, 2018, p14).  Analyzing and describing each management position will significantly demonstrate what is required in managers and leaders qualities.  The understanding of how this management’s approaches practice will provide an intellectual awareness that will be useful to explain the accompanying question.  Would you consider it a good compliment for someone to announce you a great manager or a great leader? Why? Do you believe in both?

Leader Skills

A leader can be distinguished as an individual that carries a superior position and is prepared to operate a significant level of authority or influences over others.  A leader is one that who persuades and instills the confidence to others and leads them to act.  According to (Liberty University Custom), “Leadership is a complex phenomenon involving the leader, the followers, and the situation.”  The question has been suggested what is leadership?  There has been many surveys conducted on leadership and has turned out to be a complex issue, studies have focused on leadership identity, physical traces, and the behaviors of a leader.  While other studies have examined the relations between leaders and followers.  What is clear is that leadership researchers have described leadership in many ways? (Liberty University Custom, 2018, p16).

Leadership can further be interpreted, as being both a science and an art, which represents the subject of leadership as a field of intellectual research and particular facets of leadership practice.  Leadership can likewise be considered both rational and emotional manifestations of the human experience that reflects leadership performance, and the influences that are based on reason, logic, as well as those that are based on inspiration and passion.  According to (Waters), “The effectiveness of a person’s leadership style in a particular situation depends on how well-defined the job is, how much authority the leaders has, and the relationship between the followers and the leader” (Waters, 2013 p. 324). For that reason leadership is extremely complex because it reflects different people’s personality attributes, such as thoughts or emotions, desires and dreams, needs and fears, goals and ambitions, strength and weakness.  Another established fact of positive leadership requires higher calculating and planning, following the checklist, positive leadership involves touching followers feelings, in which emotion plays a significant aspect in leadership.

Manager Skills

A manager can be interpreted as an individual in charge of a particular group of tasks, one who possesses a workforce of individuals that who report to him.  Managers’ intention is to scale down complexity and increase performance, as well as to regulate and oversee works.  Managers introduce the movements of the organization and control the distinction between driving a team toward progress or defeat. Managers further organize, promote, determine, and explain the purpose within the organization.  Managers are receptive to fresh concepts, prepared to conform to unsuspecting change, correspond frequently and effectively, and demand greatness from their team of works.  Managers will still administrative the objectives and vision of the leader which will further the vision of the leader by assuring employees follow. According to Mirada, Christ teaching aspirations is based in leadership growth with the use of Scripture knowledge, “If a leader is not growing in wisdom, he is not growing in maturity” (Eph 1:17; Col 1:9).

Compliment of a Good Leader or Manager

The compliment of a great leader or manager is the stem of effective management that is the result of three domains connecting with each other, which are, how managers, how participants, and how the situation play a part of the leadership process.  Effective leadership can be described as the process of persuading an organizational group toward accomplishing its objectives. The art of leadership reveals a further interpretation of leadership situations, mentorships, and expressions of individuals’ competences required to further influence others. According to Altmäe, Türk, & Ott-Siim, “The leader's effectiveness is based on situational contingency. This is a result of factors involving interaction of leaders, followers, and situation.” (Altmäe, Türk, & Ott-Siim, 2013). Leadership is again based on both the rational and emotional part of human nature that will have an influence on others; thus, leadership is extremely complex and cannot be pinned down to the basic method.  Leaders that are conscious of the essential aspects that regulate the leadership process will be successful during leadership process.

According to Miranda, the incorrect type of leadership handling can be explained by the teachings of a self-appointed King (1:5-10). According to the Bible, King Adonijah is an excellent illustration of how not to carry out as a leader.  King Adonijah lusted for power and praise and ruled against the teachings of Scriptures. “To humble yourself” (1Pet 5:5-6) and put others ahead of yourself.”(Phil 2:3-4). King Adonijah authority was based on a yearbook theology, which is regarded as self-centered.  King Adonijah chooses were based on it’s all about me sprit, it influenced the choices he carried out, the way he spent money, and the way he interrupted Scripture.

Good leaders will search for the best individuals to have around them, will restructure organizational functions that is formed around those individuals, efficient managers then will deal with the new complex systems and figure out how to further utilize their team within those structures.  Leaders also consider in long-terms, take risks, and explore the transformation to develop an adequate workforce.  Leaders brainstorm organizational concepts to prepare for change and demand greatness from the managers.  Managers in turn filter the message down to their teams to operate accurately and contribute to success. When an individual is identified a great leader or a great manager, it is the produce of efficient management process associated with various types of identity qualities.  A leader recognizes that their management position is to carry out effective managerial arrangements within the organization’s hierarchy.  Leaders management choices are directed within an organization, which are set in attaining organizational objectives by coronation work process in getting tasks accomplished by the efforts of others.

On the other hand, a great leader individual’s efforts can influence the process on getting team members of an organization to perform together that will uphold the interests of the organization. Good leadership effectiveness will support directing and supporting members in the undertaking of the organization’s mission and objectives.  According to (Murphy and Murphy),” The sortie out reality as to who is a manager and who is a leader is a real problem in organizations today. More importantly, because of this dilemma, the misunderstanding between manager and leader leads to false expectations of what is required from each. (Murphy, & Murphy, 2018). Leadership process is regarded as inherently superior to management process because leaders are the entities that grasp the context while managers’ submission to it.  According to (Nguyen & Hansen), “The distinction between the roles of leader and manager entails the danger that individuals will get locked into the idea that they fit only one of these two roles, not the other, and will stick to their designated role even if the changing situation warrants a change in action.” (Nguyen, & Hansen, 2016).

Leadership process and management process still have a similar relation with each other, in the contrary many will claim that leadership is fundamentally of making chooses, and also thought to do the right things, while management will not make chooses, managers are thought to do things right.  It is further determined that leaders are expected to do the right thing where managers are thought to do things right. A few illustrations of differences between managers and leaders are, managers are administrators, while leaders are innovators, and managers are controllers while leaders are influencers.

Do you believe you can be both?

Yes, because a leader or a manager you will have to be ready to establish organizational objectives, disseminated the vision and the direction in which an organization should proceed. I would maintain that you could be both.  A great manager can still have the notion of being a great leader by his followers.  An organization is reliant on the managers and leaders, which at a point will play specific roles, and is necessary to distinguish between what leadership qualities are expected and what assumptions are recommended for each role.

Managers that have a positive interpretation and produce constructive employee relationships will be prepared to provide the requested capabilities that will assist to the manager’s overall performance.  Managers that have positive interacting with followers will produce good leadership perception, in which followers will classify the individual into an effective leadership category. According to the Bible, King Adonijah leadership style opposed God’s king, he is descripted as acting as the serpent, that he represents the evil one. King Adonijah tried to become king by the “Serpent Stone.” A king favours’ a wise servant, but his anger falls on the disgraceful one.” (Prov14:35).

Manager traits that match followers expectation of a leader will establish a manager to be classified as a leader by the members, for illustration, a manager that characterizes personal attributes that are present typical by leadership prototypes, such as knowledge, outgoing, socially confident will be recognized as a leader.

The scripture explains on how to not follow the leadership style of King Adonijah, which goes against leadership process of having the notion of being considered a great leader by followers. According to the Bible, King Adonijah leadership style was based on his own pleasure. King Adonijah was described as being spoiled and had a handsome appearance, which explains that if a leader that is spoiled, attractive, self-centered is a recipe for disaster. The king was never disciplined as a young man. According to Miranda, “ Let this serve as a warning to fathers: Children must be disciplined. We discipline them because we love them, just as the father disciplines us.” (Prov 3:11-12: Heb 12:7).

A manager that practices face-to-face contact with subordinates will provide a leadership reception.  The managers personal qualities and organizational social network position will further contribute to a leadership perception, for example managers who are arranged in an important positive network among members, will motivate members to approach the leader figure for task related assistance.  Managers will have the capacity to provide instant and needed service to members; leadership attributes of being supportive and the contributions to the group will add to the authority perception.  Followers who observe managers that maintain an effective social position will provide the manager unique leadership qualities of being efficient and supportive.  According to (Chiu, Balkundi, & Weinberg), “When followers perceive their managers as leaders, followers exhibit higher organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and well-being, as well as a greater willingness to engage in extra-role behaviors outside of their formal duties, with salting and higher overall organizational performance.” (Chiu, Balkundi, & Weinberg, 2017).

Conclusion

The above reflection highlights the importance of answering the query of would you consider it a great compliment for someone to announce you a great manager or a great leader?  The assimilation of leadership process, management process, and Christian faith theories provided a revealing of the many management approaches that empowers leaders to find solutions to management problems. Leadership and management principles will further help motivate followers to offer to an organization management environment.  Good leadership effectiveness will support organization change and support members in the undertaking of the organization’s mission and objectives. Leaders personal qualities and organizational social network can also contribute to greater leadership perception. There are two different leadership roles, which require different skills in order to achieve success. It is important to understand each role in order to the distinguished whether you are a leader or a manager. The understanding of how these leadership concepts operate will provide scholarly peer review knowledge that will be able to answer the following question. The interpretation of leadership and management performance, the expected particular skills will discover whether one is considered a leader or a manager.  The realization of how this management’s approaches work will produce leaders the capability to persuade and motivate members within an organization. The shared management principles; associated with biblical doctrine methods can have a positive effect developing Christian based management decisions that reinforces Gods’ gospel teachings.
