Analytical writing is unique in comparisons to its relatives such as summary, expressive writing, and argument. According to Miriam Webster's Dictionary, to analyze means to study or determine the nature and relationship of the parts of (something). In our text, Writing Analytically, Rosenwasser and Stephen add on to this statement by stating that Analysis provides a frame of mind that allows people to divide the subject into its defining parts, its main elements or ingredients while considering how these parts are related, both to each other and to the issue a whole ( Rosenwasser and Stephen 2015, 3). For this discussion board, I will be reviewing two high-quality types of analytical articles or writings that will demonstrate three main characteristics of analytical writing.

The first article,  entitled “Political and Institutional Influences on the use of evidence in public Health Policy," A Systematic Review by Liverani, Hawkins and Parkhurst analyses the vital roles of institutional structures, and political contestation of policy issues as central to understanding policy decisions ( 2013,1).  Towards the beginning of the articles, the authors state the method in which they came to their conclusions, “We conducted a systemic review of empirical studies that examined the influence of key features of political systems and institutional mechanisms on evidence use, and contextual factors” (Liverani, Hawkins, Parkhurst 2013,1 ). Here, we see objectivity implied which sets up the narrative for the rest of the article. The audience should expect this article to be based solely on facts and evidence versus personal ideas or opinions which is key to analytical writing. The next thing that had me intrigued was a statement which reads, “To advance our understanding of these questions, we conducted a systematic review of empirical studies that examine the complex interface between politics, policy and the use of evidence” (2013,3). From that statement, we realize that there are complexities; ingredients if you will call it, that need the understanding to view the subject as a whole. As our text mentions, an analysis is a form of detective work which provides the opportunity to dig deeper when we think we know something but want to know more. About the second statement, it is quite direct and unambiguous as to what the theme of the article is.  Overall, the material is characterized by carefully qualified (ethos) statements that are never overstated and always backed up with evidence to justify claims. ( Rosenwasser and Stephen 2019, 9).

The next article is titled, Objective  Evidence on  Media Bias: Newspaper Coverage of Congressional  Party Switcher.  The first direct statement reads, "This paper tries to move the discussion forward by offering an objective method for measuring media bias, and presents results based on that method (Niven 2003, 2). From this statement, we already have a clear direction as to where the article is headed.

Making claims without any evidence is something that analytical writing does not represent. The following statement; along with many others, always provide a separate reference to justify their claims. "There are hundreds of articles published every year in U.S. newspapers on media bias, most alleging that newspapers favor liberals and Democrats over conservatives and Republicans" ( Niven 2003, 11). Last but not least, one common denominator of all effective writing is that it pays close attention to detail (Rosenwasser and Stephen 2013,5). Within the article, multiple tables and charts provide the audience with a better visual of the results. Luke 14:28–30 refers to laying a solid foundation so that you whatever you build will last.  As researchers, it is vital that we begin with a concrete foundation to effectively develop an analysis of a subject.  By providing evidence for every claim, being objective, and direct in our writings we can be confident that we will honor Christ.

The first article I thought was an example of high-quality analytical writing was titled Evaluating the Effect of State Regulation of Federally Licensed Firearm Dealers on Firearm Homicide. The article focused on how federal regulations relating to firearm dealers were related to firearm homicide looking at the years 1995-2010. The study fell outside of the communication triangle as it was not subject-centered, writer-centered, or reader-centered. (Rosenwasser 2012, 6) The study focused on if there was a relationship between state licensing and dealer regulations influenced firearm homicide. The study did not summarize other people’s work but was instead their own, it was not argumentative because it did not try to prove a point but instead tried to see if there was a relationship between two things, and it was not expressive because the paper tried to figure out what the relationship between the two points were. The paper also talks about the limitations and the short comings in their study. The paper states that ‘’ Furthermore, we were un- able to quantify enforcement in our models, which evidence suggested is an important factor in determining the effect of laws.’’. This was the authors showing how the paper could be improved and reformulated for future studies on similar topics. (Rosenwasser 2012, 16) (Irvin 2014)

The second article I selected was titled Public Support For Gun Violence Prevention Policies Among Gun Owners and Non-Gun Owners in 2017. This article on comparing public support for numerous gun policies looking at the difference in results between gun owners and non-gun owners in 2017. One of the reasons I selected this paper was because it did not try and convince you of a certain point of view or look summarize someone else’s work. (Rosenwasser 2012, 6) The paper was very good at just laying out what it looking for, how they were going about it and telling the results of their study without trying to convince you that more or less gun control was needed. The paper did not go from observing data to creating claims or making broad generalizations about the results they found. (Rosenwasser 2012, 10)  The paper was very clear on the methods they used to collect data and how they analyzed the results. The paper mentioned which company they used to conduct the survey, how they went about contacting people for the survey and how they weighed the results. (Barry 2017)

In conclusion the papers I selected were good because the authors went into the research not trying to find out if their point was correct, but instead tried to determine the relationship if any between two things. The authors had a good foundation and idea about what they were comparing and how they would go about the study. The authors did not sit down and rush to build a ‘’tower’’ but instead sat down and planned how they would go about it. I believe these traits are important for honoring Christ in our works it allows us to keep an open mind going into the project and not judging something before we actually study it first.
