Planet Fitness SWOT

  • Strengths: Appeals to those wishing for “No judgement,” generally those that are very out of shape or intimidated by the common gym experience. Low cost of entry for clients and low-monthly fees. Clean and high-end equipment, boutique feel. Offers food to clients on certain days of the week.

  • Weaknesses: Does not appeal to the vast majority of dedicated gym-goers. Low-cost memberships and high-cost equipment raises the cost-per-client ratios, forces mass acquisitions of clients, and relies on member’s attendance to dwindle over time (while still paying).

  • Opportunities: New Year resolution’ers. Obesity continues to rise. Most clients sign-up and attend minimally.

  • Threats: Home gym equipment. Recent emphasis on minimalist gyms and functional fitness. Dietary and nutritional programs.

From the perspective of any “normal” gym in the United States, Planet Fitness is different. It does not fit the mold of most gyms, which is deliberate and calculated. Plant Fitness employs a focused low-cost strategy, seeking to differentiate their service from the services offered by seemingly all of the other designer gym companies. Utilizing a SWOT analysis, this posting will seek to demonstrate the deliberate focused low-cost strategy employed by Planet Fitness.

Strengths. Planet Fitness strives to appeal to a different customer-base than most gyms. Their model is centered around attracting individuals that are new to the gym experience or intimidated by the common gym experience. They offer a casual experience with no heavy weights and tout themselves as a “no judgement zone.” They offer a very low cost of entry for clients and very low monthly fees (~$10/month). Planet Fitness employs very clean and high-end fitness equipment and provides a designer or boutique atmosphere. They also offer food to their clients, such as pizza, on certain days of the week (Fruhlinger, 2018).

Weaknesses. Planet Fitness does not appeal to the vast majority of dedicated gym-goers. Their low-cost membership plans and high-cost equipment raises the cost-per-client. This forces Planet Fitness to acquire more members than most gyms and this model is also built on the assumption that individual member’s attendance will dwindle over time, while still paying their monthly fee.

Opportunities. Gym memberships usually rise around the turn of the New Year. Although an epidemic and tragic, obesity is on the rise in the United States, which will ensure longevity. In general, most client’s sign-up for Planet Fitness and their attendance dwindles over time.

Threats. Home gym equipment and at-home fitness programs are becoming more accessible with the advent of the internet. There has also been a recent emphasis on creating minimalist gyms and gyms oriented toward functional fitness. The accessibility of dietary and nutritional programs seeks to reduce the requirement for gym memberships.

Planet Fitness also differentiates themselves geographically, opening locations in parts of the United States in which other gyms dare not go (Fruhlinger, 2018). Due to their low-cost membership model, Planet Fitness is able to franchise and succeed in areas of the United States with lower median incomes. The local median household income, averaged among all of Planet Fitness’ 1,500 locations, is $70,327. Their largest competitor, 24 Hour Fitness, operates in zip codes that average $91,691.

In order to cut costs for franchising, Planet Fitness often opens franchise location in areas that have low median incomes andby renting-out locations in failing shopping centers. Most of their operating locations are in previously-renovated shopping stores or grocery stores within failing strip malls. In doing so, they further reduce their overhead and expenses, which facilitates profitability despite low membership fees.

By exploiting their unique strengths and seizing the opportunities as they are presented, Planet Fitness has differentiated themselves from other gym companies. They concentrate on a narrower buyer segment and outcompete rivals within those niche spaces (Misner, 2019).

Class,

According to Michael Porter, competitive strategy is all about being different. Intentionally choosing to perform activities differently than the competition. To create a unique variety of values. Out of the five generic competitive strategy’s I choose to elaborate on low- cost provider strategy. This strategy simply means what it says; striving to achieve overall low- cost products that appeal to the large number of customers.

This strategy is done by under pricing the competition. A good example of this organizational process would be the organization that I utilize every day for my lively hood. The company that sells for less-Walmart. Sam Walton had ten beliefs for making a successful business and the one that connects with Mr. Porters strategy’s is Swim upstream. Sam Walton meaning for this phrase was: go in the opposite direction. Ignore the conventional wisdom. If everybody else is doing it one way, there's a good chance you can find your niche by going in exactly the opposite direction.

Walmart strength is being the largest retailer in the world, with unequal scale of operations and strong market power over suppliers and competitors. The company believe by using their strengths to collaborate with others will transform a system we all rely on. Like concentrating on opportunity, sustainability and community. Which is beneficial for the bottom line.

Walmart weakness is competing with Amazon on line trying to focus on quick free shipping and other benefits to get ahead of the competitor. The largest retailer only carries about 55% of online products compared to Amazon 85%.
