Research Question : How many calories /kilograms of weight will I lose in a week/month/year if I replace ALL fizzy sweet drinks (i.e. Cola, Lemonade etc) with water ? or How my BMI (Body Mass Index) will change in a month/year if replace ALL fizzy sweet drinks (i.e. Cola, Lemonade etc) with water (i.e. Cola, Lemonade etc) ? Justification/background/relevance. It is well established that one of the main reasons behind growing obesity problem is over -consumption of sweet drinks. Obesity is r apidly becoming one of the leading causes of health prob lems in the world and in the UAE in particular where a bout 19% of the population suffers from diabetes. Learning about h ealthy life style is a priority in the UAE . Type of the Project : Experimental . Duration of data collection : 1 week/10 days – the longer the better. Suitable for an Individual or Group execution. If it is done in a group, every group member should collect personal data and then the data are inter -compared, which makes it more interesting. Hypothesis: If I give up sweet fizzy drinks I will lose calories/ weight. Independent variable – amount of calories in sweet drinks Dependent variable – amount of lost calories/weight Data collection steps: 1. Spend 1 week/10 days drinking water instead of drinking fizz y sweet drinks. Count the total number of bottles. Use labels on sweet drinks which you usually drink to find out the amount of calories. Calculate the total amount of calories lost from not drinking sweet drinks. Make sure not to replace sweet drinks with sweets and candies or extra sweet coffee and tea. 2. Enter all the data in excel, make graphs (e.g. bar chart) comparing the calories obtained from usual sweet drink consumption and the reduction in calories. Extrapolate the results for a month/year. 3. Optiona l – students may calculate their total calories consumption in a day using mobile app myfitnesspal where they log in every food and find the amount of calories they consume. This will give them an idea whether they exceed their recommended amount of calori e consumption. 4. Optional . Students may also calculate their BMI (Body Mass Index = of weight in kgs/(height in m) 2 . Using online charts students can check if their BMI is within the normal range (18 -24.9); they are overweight (25 -30) or obese >30. Reduct ion in sweet drinks consumption would lead to reduction in BMI.
