Research Project Guidelines. Research Project Assessment comprises conducting a group or individual research into one of the topics, chosen by the students with teacher guidance. The number of the students in a group depends on the type of the research The following criteria should be taken into account while choosing a Research Topic. 1. Novelty (new social or emergi ng social trend, or new interesting practical applications) or 2. Relevance to student life/health/fitness/healthy life style or 3. Global issue s/va lue to local community or 4. Relevance to students major (Business, IT, Engineering or Health Science) adding value to students. Ideally, t he students should be interested to find out the answer to their research question. It is good to AVOID trivial or rout ine topics, which have been explored before and t he answer to which is not of any value to anyone (e.g. which type of ice cream melts quicker, or which type of decoration on cup cakes is preferred by kids or how coffee increases blood pressure etc) . A lis t of suggested Research Topics is given below . Research Project consist s of two major parts: 1. Research Poster (25%) and 2. Oral Presentation of the Poster (10%) . Research Poster is further subdivided into 2 separate tasks. 1. In-class wri tten assessment , which justifies students research. Essentially, this is an Introduction section of the Poster. Students are required to write 300 -400 - words introducing their research topic, explaining why they have chosen this topic and formulating research question. The y have to use and paraphrase at least 2 reliable sources of information to provide justification for their research. The assessment is written under exam condition in class, but students are allowed to bring their notes. Each student write s individual asse ssment , even if they work together as a group. This work may be later combined or edited into the Introduction section of the Poster. This task is 40% out of the total Research Poster task. Deadline for the written asessment : 2 8 March . 2. Submission of the results : exce l data together with the graph. Students are required to compile the excel spreadsheet and make graphs in class and submit it under teachers control to e nsure the quality of the results. In case, if students use Survey Monkey for data collection, the graph s are generated automatically and the excel work is not necessary in some cases. The students then submit their graphs, choosing the most appropriate with the teachers’ guidance . This submission is graded late r as a part of the whole poster. Deadline for th e data submission: 18 April . 3. Research Poster is submitted as a whole piece in ppt/pdf format . Deadline 25 April. It should include the following subheadings: Introduction (students may use the essay they have submitted and apply teacher’s comments) Methods ; Results ; Discussion, Conclusions. Reference list (at least 3 reliable sources). Students should also need to produce an abstract of the poster. For the details of the poster submission and rubrics please see BBLearn. 4. Research Poster is presented ora lly/or ppt with video may be submitted instead. Deadline 2 May . Examples of Research Topics/Questions. If experimental p roject is done in a group, each group member should collect data individually (calories lost, plastic waste saved etc) and then the data are inter -compared among the group members. How many calories will I lose in a week/month/year if I (walk stairs in college every day or play football at least once a week or go to the gym at least once a week or stop dirnkin g fizzy/sweet drinks or stop eating junk food etc etc.). 3. Global Issues. Research design – questionnaire and secondary data collection . Public perception of global warming impacts in the UAE and the actual temperature changes during the last decade. 4. Globa l Issues. Experiment. How much single -use plastic waste will be saved in a week/month/year if I/we give up single use coffee mugs (invest in a durable coffee mug) or water bottles / or plastic shopping bags. 5.
