SCHOOL COUNSELING

The Case of Sophia

Sophia is 17 years old and a high school junior planning to attend college. She will be the first from her family to attend college. Sophia has above average grades and has exceeded the minimum score for the state university in her SAT scores, although she does not know what she wants to study in college. Other than some teachers, she knows very few adults with college degrees and feels she is entering uncharted waters. The adults in her extended family work together running the family restaurant. They are supportive of her attending college and have many ideas about what she should study based on many of their own unfulfilled college dreams. She wonders why she does not seem to have dreams of her own. She is seeking counseling to explore her options.

Questions

Hi, Sophia, it’s nice to meet you. What brings you here?

"I’m so confused and…well, I feel like I’ve been working for years to get into college. But now that it’s starting to look like a reality, I have no idea why I should go. No-one else in my family went to college, though a few of them really should have. And that’s the other thing. I have this amazing opportunity, but I feel like if I make the wrong decisions, I’ll be letting everyone down. "

How do you typically go about making decisions?

"My parents usually decide things for me. Lately, they ask what I think more, but my mom in particular helps me figure out what I really want to do when I have to make a decision. She’s really good at helping me see why something might not be good for me, even when I think it’s what I want. If my folks aren’t around, though, I like to think about my choices. A lot. My friends tease me that I take so long, looking at all the options, but usually once I make a decision, I’m happy with it. "

If you had to choose a path today, what might it be?

"That’s why I’m here! I have no idea. Which makes me think, I shouldn’t waste everyone’s money and time going to college after all. Which…that makes me really sad to say that, because I really want to go to college, but I don’t really know why I do. I don’t know…when I was a little kid, I used to pretend to be a doctor. All my dolls had Band-Aids all over them and a couple even had amputations, though that’s sort of gross, isn’t it? But becoming a doctor–how many doctors bus tables after school at their parent’s restaurant?"
