Abstract

Even in small cities and towns, juvenile gang complications are increasing throughout the United States. The structure and demographics of these juvenile gangs are forever changing; thus drug gangs are becoming more prominent in today’s society versus youth gangs which appear to be small in size and less structured. Moreover, since the ancient times, the contemporary crime of gang violence labeled as homicide has begun to increase drastically. Thus, juvenile gangs and their social epidemic problems are escalating across the United States like never before. Yet, through the increased potency and readily accessible lethal weapons, many of the gangs in the United States have become much more violent. Even more so, there is no agreement on what composes a juvenile gang, as the definition of juvenile gang varies from community to community. According to the text of Miller (1992) there has been much progress in distinguishing risk factors for youth gang involvement; Yet, much more data and information is required to implement effective prevention and intervention programs for youth involved in gang or even gang violence. Starting in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Criminal Justice System today has been able to enforce new alternatives to the traditional police model, putting more emphasis on motorized patrol, rapid responses to calls and retrospective investigation of crimes. Furthermore, through the implementation of the problem-oriented policing, police officers have been taught how to inquire about the nature of problems and then how to develop specific tactics to address these problems. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explain how youth educational and employment opportunities in the form of tutoring, job training and job placement will help to reduce gang involvement among our youth. Based on anomie and strain theories, I will inform and explain the immediate need of gang preventions and intervention programs that justify current program funding and differentiates youth gang involvement from adult criminal organizations.
