  3. Search the internet to locate a political action committee (PAC) whose purpose, philosophy, and ideology resemble your own thoughts on a policy topic of your choosing. Locate another PAC whose purpose, philosophy, and ideology are contrary to those of the first PAC.  Compare and contrast the two PACs, including their approaches to the topic.

  4. Discuss at least three difficulties that confront researchers who are trying to measure poverty in the United States.

  5. Discuss the ways that Social Security Act has been expanded over the years to include adults and children with disabilites,, Medicare and Medicaid, and other social services. Do you think it was wise to expand the services under Social Security? What do you think would be the effect if the government were to try to eliminate one or more of these programs?

  6. Some businesses and organizations are exempt from provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Imagine that you are the director of such an organization. A client with a disability has requested an accommodation under the act, which will take resources away from other areas of greater need. You are not legally required to provide the accommodation. Discuss the ethical considerations that would go into your decision-making process.

  7. Many people believe that work requirements for welfare recipients encourage people to become self-sufficient and eventually support their families without government assistance. Others find the requirements to be oppressive, especially in view of the lack of support for child care services and other work support system Discuss the pros and cons of work requirements for welfare recipients.

  8. When someone tells you a story about someone they know or someone they have heard of who is taking advantage of the “welfare” system (e.g., having another child to obtain a higher TANF payment, not working when they are capable), how would you respond?
