Chapter 3

Managing ethically (page 114 - 115) – Questions 1 & 2.

Questions

  1. Either individually or in a group, think about the ethical implications of requiring long hours and extensive amounts of travel for some jobs.

(Managers are a vital stakeholder group because they are responsible for using a company’s resources to increase its performance and produce more profits. In this case, I’d like to take a look at the situation in two different scenarios. First possible scenario that came to my mind is maybe the organization’s business has grown so rapidly where the managers are allowing their employees to work long hours and travel sorely based on their volunteerism. In terms of managing ethically, managers should provide fair amount of bonuses or over-time pays to the employees. Of course, the managers need to make plans for the future and adjust its manning and reorganize the company according to higher demanding of their products/services. Second possible scenario that I thought of is the case where the managers deliberately abuse their employees and not hire more people to save money. Which, of course, is very unethical management practices. Companies never should take advantages of their employees to earn more profits but they need to ethically treat their employees by creating an occupational structure that fairly and equitably rewards employees for their contributions and meet their expectations.)

  1. What obligations do you think managers and companies have to enable employees to have a balanced life and meet nonwork needs and demands?

(Our text book (pg 105, paragraph II) perfectly explains their obligations: “Socioeconomic diversity suggests that managers need to be sensitive and responsive to the needs and concerns of workers who may be less fortunate than themselves in terms of income and financial resources, child care and elder care options, housing opportunities, and existence of sources of social and family support. Moreover—and equally important—managers should try to give such individuals opportunities to learn, advance, and make meaningful contributions to their organizations while improving their economic well-being.”

As the text book also defines employees as the stakeholder, they are the back bone of the company who are directly involved with providing their products/services and companies earn profit because of/through them. Other than to say it is ethical to take care of their own employees, it also is more beneficial to take good care of them. Employees will be much more productive once they trust that their company is actually taking care of them which will lead them to perform ‘organizational citizenship behaviors.’ At the same time, those employees will create much better organization culture for the company and affect the whole environment including others who they work with.)

Chapter 4

Be the Manager (page 150)

  1. Analyze the major forces in the task environmentof a retail clothing store.

(In this case, there are three major forces in the task environment of the retail clothing store: 1) The other two major clothing stores are the ‘competitors’, 2) ‘customers’, 3) 10 purchasing managers who are the ‘suppliers’.

  1. Devise a program that will help other managers and employees to better understand and respond to their store’s task environment.

(I have found some key elements that they need to fix. First, they need to understand what customers need. Secondly, limited numbers of the suppliers also limited their potentials. Finally, the culture of the store needs to be revitalized.

According to the findings, I would try to understand the customers need by studying the competitors’ sales trends. Then, I would expand the number of suppliers by adding those who can provide what customers need. Lastly, I would try to change the culture of the store by incorporating various award programs for the salespeople, such as ‘employee of the month’, provide bonus for the sales person who have provided the best customer service, or reward those employees who brings great ideas to improve efficiency or effectiveness of the company. I believe those changes I’ve mentioned would be the most ethical and healthy way to overcome the current issues.)
