Lung Cancer Screening in the Occupational Setting – An Update

Overview of Article:

This article focuses on a study by The National Cancer Institute (NCI) on why lung cancer screening has to be or not be included in the medical occupation setting. It was overviewed by the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) on the number of patients receiving cancer treatment especially those with a track of current or previous smoking-related issues.1 The results are from a population at high risk of lung cancer hence ensuring that cancer was detected at early stages so enhancing the treatment process.

Major Points/Findings:

Accordingly, after the study was conducted, NLST was able to establish the potential benefits and harms of LDCT screening in other groups of smokers and other age groups. For instance, there was the harm of conducting a cancer screening such as diagnostic evaluations of false positive results or cancer from radiation.1 Therefore, the LDCT was able to formulate a modeling balance between the benefits and harms which were as a result of influence from crucial aspects of public health creating guidelines on how to endorse the LDCT lung-cancer screening program.

Limitations of Research:

The study was only conducted on participants aged between 55-74years who had a trail of smoking. It thus limited the younger generation from the study results recommendations. Moreover, it is not only smoking that can cause lung cancer hence a further study is highly recommended.

Application to Your Practice of Respiratory Therapy and/or the overall impact on the field of Respiratory Care:

This study is a very important piece because it lays out a foundation on the benefits and harms of practicing cancer screening in our respiratory care fields. With this, we are able to understand implement the positivity of the research in an attempt to detect lung cancer incidences at an early stage hence provide the required treatment.1 Lung cancer proves to be curable if detected at early stages hence the study could be of a great impact if lung cancer screening is given a go-ahead for use in practicing respiratory therapy.
