Research Paper

“A research paper is the culmination and final product of an involved process of research, critical thinking, source evaluation, organization, and composition…. The goal of a research paper is not to inform the reader what others have to say about a topic, but to draw on what others have to say about a topic and engage the sources in order to thoughtfully offer a unique perspective on the issue at hand.” ( https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/658/02/).

This assignment will be discussed further in class. You will be asked to pick a social issue/topic (addiction, mental health, child abuse and neglect, adult abuse, juvenile delinquency, adult crime, rehabilitation, long-term care or other issue of interest to you) and discuss the issue/concern and how social workers assist in responding to this concern including their role and function. You must utilize at least five scholarly reference sources. APA format must be followed.

Your paper should include the following:

  • A clear thesis statement

  • Explanation of why your topic is important to the field of social work.

  • Description of the problem, prevalence of the problem, population affected, and cost to society

  • Explain the social worker's role and function in addressing the concern at the micro, mezzo, and macro level

  • Demonstration of quality research including a properly formatted reference page and in text citations; and

  • Adherence to APA format and academic voice

You will sign up with your chosen topic prior to starting this paper. This paper should be at least 5-6 pages, double spaced. The title page and reference page do not count toward the totalnumber of pages. No abstract required. Refer to the rubric below for more information.

Research Paper Rubric

Grading Criteria Literature Review Paper

Highest Possible Grade

Medium Grade

Lower Grade

Identification of a topic relevant to social work; include thesis statement (main idea/argument for your paper) and mapping sentences.

-Identify a topic that is relevant to social work practice.

-The identified topic is clear to the reader, and addressed both in the thesis and throughout the paper.

  • Include mapping sentences to direct your reader to what will be in the paper.

8-10 points

- A topic is identified but may lack a clear focus for the reader. Weaker answers may address the topic in the thesis statement but lack consistent support in the body of the paper.

4-7 points

- A topic is not identified or made clear for the reader (lacks thesis statement and focus from the beginning).

Less than 4 points

Describe prevalence; population affected; cost to society; cite resources for this information.

-All parts are included in the paper (prevalence, population, cost to society) with enough information to provide the reader with a clear picture of the topic. This should be no less than a solid paragraph of information for each.

-Proper credit is given to scholarly sources through citation.

Points

60-70 points

-All parts are not included or not given adequate space in the body of the paper.

Answers in this category may also present information in a way that is difficult to follow due to lack of organization or connection of ideas.

45-60 points

- Scholarly sources are not cited for ideas.

- Weak papers are missing more than one part identified.

Poor answers may relay inaccurate information or rely on personal accounts.

44 or less points

Organization, and University -level writing

Strong writing has few to no spelling or grammatical errors, and no first-person narrative style. Writing flows in a manner that is easy for an educated lay person to follow.

-Papers must include a clearly identified introductory paragraph with thesis (and, preferably, a mapping sentence); a substantial body that demonstrates understanding and depth of research; and finishes with a conclusion that summarizes the paper.

  • Strong papers follow APA format with few errors and are at least 4 pages in length (not including title and reference pages); no longer than 6 pages long.

20-25 points

Slightly problematic writing may include some mechanical errors at the sentence structure level or minor lapses into use of the first-person narrative style

-Paragraphs may lack specific organizing focus or connection to the thesis statement. Body of paragraph lacks depth of research or may be weak at making connections for the reader.

  • Not in APA format.

15-20 points

Weak essays may be difficult to understand due to problems with writing mechanics, or the basic flow of the argument.

There may also be excessive use of the first-person narrative style.

Poor organization interferes with basic understanding of the connections being made in the paper. Weak papers may include material outside of or even irrelevant to the course content.

Less than 15 points

The extent to which the essay demonstrates the ability to design and implement research processes

-Minimum research considers at least five articles from peer reviewed journals, scholarly websites, and/or books (strong research goes beyond this).

-Research is thoughtful and deliberate so as to clearly relate to the topic and social work practice.

-Strong papers cite sources properly throughout.

20-25 points

-Solid papers utilize research from three articles from peer reviewed journals and/or books BUT may not be deliberate and thoughtful. This may be demonstrated in weak or confusing use of the sources.

-There may be adequate research in relation to the ‘References’ page, but those sources may not be adequately utilized or cited in the actual paper.

15-20 points

-Weak papers fail to meet the minimal research requirements, and/or may use non-peer reviewed sources.

May meet the minimal research requirements but fail to clearly use the research adequately or accurately.

-Weak papers may rely on “common sense” /personal knowledge or non-peer reviewed sources for the paper.

Less than 15 points

The extent to which the paper demonstrates an ability to explain the social workers role and function in addressing the concern at the micro, mezzo, and macro level

An excellent paper will properly, adequately, and accurately explain the social workers role and function in addressing the concern at the micro, mezzo, and macro level.

- Strong papers are aimed at using the research to inform social work practice and are therefore aware of practical application.

The topic of social work noted in the thesis statement should be clearly connected to this part of the paper.

60-70 points

A strong paper will generally explain the social worker’s role in micro, mezzo, and macro level work.

-The paper may not provide evidence of understanding of practical application.

45-60 points

Weak papers may offer little or only a weak description of the research and its application to practice or may be missing major opportunity for discussion of the levels of practice.

Problematic papers largely fail to address micro, mezzo, and macro level work in relation to the topic.
