Actual effects of dress codes, not just when they are enforced in high schools, but in aspects of everyday life:

Abstract

Dress codes are a common among different communities and are used as a way of showing identity or belonging to a certain group. Some of the places where dress codes are commonly used include schools, workplaces, churches, and even generally in public. Following a certain dress code is usually considered as an obligation of a person to his or her group or community. Nonetheless, dress codes have both negative and positive impacts in all aspects of life. Some of the negative impacts include encouraging discrimination, stereotypes, and limiting freedom of expression. Some of the positive impacts include promoting equality, building employee morale, and encouraging discipline. This essay discusses why dress code is important not only in the in high schools but also in the aspects of everyday life. Dress code promotes positive social behaviors by enhancing discipline and equality in the community.

Alyssa Pavlakis, & Rachel Roegman. “How dress codes criminalize males and sexualize females of color.” Phi Delta Kappa International. 2018. https://www.kappanonline.org/pavlakis-roegman-dress-codes-gender-race-discrimination/

School dress codes have been used as a means of discriminating against gender and race. The author investigates different negative implications of mandated dress codes in schools on students of color; both male and female. The research shows that there are negative implications of using dress codes in schools such as lateness and delays since students spend much time to look for an outfit which matches the school’s requirements. Besides this, certain dress codes go against certain cultural ideals, which undermines student’s identities. For example, in some cases, Muslim females are not allowed to cover their face and hair as required by their religious laws. The results of the research show that dress code is used to criminalize males of color whereby they are discouraged to wear hoodies because the school fears that they might be using it to conceal a weapon. The negative implication of using dress codes is that students of color have a higher risk of being coded and disciplined as compared to white students (Pavlakis & Roegman). This article clearly shows how dress codes can be used to promote discrimination and will be used to show how institutions support dress codes reduces distraction among students.

Johnston, Howard. Student Dress Codes and Uniforms. Research Brief. Education Partnerships, Inc. 2009.

Dress codes have a negative social and economic impact on students and their families which leads to dissatisfaction in some of the dress code and school uniforms policies. Howard acknowledges that the debate on the effects of dress code and school uniform policies has led to mixed reactions from the public. Even though no states have passed laws which mandate students to wear school uniforms, there are existing policies which determine the type of school attire that students are required to wear (Howard 4). One of the negative implications of these dress codes is that it has denied students the freedom of expression, i.e. expression of their religious and political ideas. For example, some institutions do not support wearing of religious attires such as cloaks or any overgarment which covers the school uniform. Students who are affected by these policies are often torn between following the strict dress codes and following their religion. This has also put poor parents in difficult situations since they cannot afford some of the clothing requirements. The negative impact of these dress codes is that students are denied educational opportunity since some of them are sent home or placed under isolation due to cress codes violation. None the less, there is a notable improvement of discipline among students due to these dress codes. Dress codes have also been valued as a way to improve school safety since it makes it easier to distinguish students from outsiders. This article presents a legal and social perspective on the impact of dress codes in schools. The arguments presented in this article will be used to analyze the reactions and the role of parents and legal authorities as far as dress codes and uniforms are concerned.

Meredith Johnson Harbach. Sexualization, sex discrimination, and public School dress codes. University Of Richmond Law Review Vol. 50:1039, 2016.

Dress codes portray a negative image of women which sends a message that exposing the female body is bad. This article presents a legal perspective of dress codes and its impact on women both in the public setting and in the school setting. According to Harbach, the use of dress codes contributes to sex stereotypes and sex discrimination which negatively affects the female gender (1040). Both in learning institutions and in the workplaces there are strict dressing code policies which seem to focus more on the female gender. For example, schools in states such as Virginia and Florida strongly oppose certain dressing among females such as leggings and strapless dress during prom. This is based on the argument that this manner of dressing is distracting. Harbach argues that based on the First Amendment, the dress codes policies should be more gender neutral so as to reduce the impact of sex discrimination which is experienced in different educational institutions and in the public in general (1042). This will reduce the cases of sexual harassment and discrimination against the female gender. Even though students have tried to challenge some of these dress codes their efforts have been overwhelmed by the powers and authority of school administrations. This has raised the question of whether female students are protected by the constitution or are meant to be subjected to discriminatory policies used in schools. However, schools argue that dress code is a crucial matter which has a direct impact on the education performance of students. As such, to perform their role effectively as stipulated by the law, they deem it necessary to impose strict dress codes. The negative effects of this mandate are that unlike the male students, female students will continue to be subjected to changing and stricter dress code as compared to male students. This article presents a detailed analysis of different perceptions of how the constitution impacts dress codes used in educations. The information shared by this article will be used to evaluate the positive impact of dress codes in discouraging sex discrimination and stereotypes in educational institutions.

Sharkey, Marisa Avallone. A” study to determine how casual dress in the workplace affects employee morale and productivity.” Theses and Dissertations. 2000. https://rdw.rowan.edu/etd/1743

Dress codes are an important part of the workplace ethics which has a direct impact on the morale and the productivity of employees. This article presents a research which was conducted in different companies with the aim of investigating the impact of implementing dress codes in the workplace. According to the managers’ response, they used to allow employees to wear casual clothes in order to create a friendly environment where employees would be free and flexible. However, this led to a trend of indecent wear which had a negative impact on the productivity of the employees. Besides this, companies received multiple cases of sexual harassment and lawsuits. As such, the managers say it necessary to implement dress codes which would limit the dressing of the employees to clothes which were not revealing or provocative. When asked, the managers conveyed that, the companies functioned better with a stricter rule about how employees should dress. According to the results of the research, dress codes had a positive impact on employee morale and workplace productivity (Avallone 26). However, it did not change the overall quality of work of employees. This article effectively examines the impact of dress codes in the workplace and explains why it is included as part of the moral obligations of employees. The arguments presented in this research will be used to discuss why dress code is more of a responsibility than a burden to women in the workplace

Terence A. Shimp. “Implications of imposed dress codes for consumer behavior, and consumer behavior implications for understanding the effects of dress codes.Advances in Consumer Research. Volume 23, 1996. Pages 76-77.

The imposition of strict dress codes is important in preserving group identity and reducing disciplinary problems such as discrimination, fashion competition, and violence among students. Shimp acknowledges that the use of branded dress codes such as team jackets, t-shirts, and boots promotes democratic ideals and enables the community to distinguish insiders and outsiders (76). Responses from different consumers show that there are many positive implications of using mandated dress codes in schools which encourages decency, cleanliness, and safety among students. One of the benefits of using dress codes is that it discourages certain street behaviors and attitudes which don’t support the ideals of education. This has improved discipline among students which has enabled students to focus on their education and preserving the moral ideals of their respective institutions. Nonetheless, the use of imposed dress codes may not have a significant impact in reducing competition and violence among students. This is because school children will still compete over the expenses of their uniforms which undermines students who are from less-privileged families. Even though the author acknowledges that mandatory dress codes reduce discrimination among students, the type and cost of different uniforms encourage students to form inside gangs or cliques which conflict amongst each other. This article presents notable insights about the importance of dress codes in education settings and it will be used to discuss the positive social and economic implications of mandated dress codes.
