Annotated Bibliography: Introduction

As a current member of a primary management office that manages the deployment of an electronic health record for military treatment facilities across the globe; what I find most interesting is the organizational culture. My transition from the military, and landing my first “real” job; albeit slightly in the same vein as my previous occupation has allowed me to draw many differences as well as parallels in the organization culture. This organizational theory is important to me because I believe that by understanding an organizational culture you can then identify problems that may affect organizational business as a whole.

Ahmetoglu, G., Akhtar, R., Tsivrikos, D., & Chamorro-Premuzic, T. (2018). The entrepreneurial organization: The effects of organizational culture on innovation output. Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research, 70(4), 318–338. https://doi.org/10.1037/cpb0000121

This source was located in a consulting psychology journal from December of 2018. It discusses the need for employers to empower their employees through entrepreneurship to create internal innovation that pushes the organization forward. This is a practice and research journal using samples of actual employees of organizations. I deem this source useful due to its explanation of how being able to identify the wrong things can help determine what is needed to be done to change the culture and steer an organization in the right direction.

Kangas, M., Kaptein, M., Huhtala, M., Lämsä, A.-M., Pihlajasaari, P., & Feldt, T. (2018). Why do managers leave their organization? Investigating the role of ethical organizational culture in managerial turnover. Journal of Business Ethics, 153(3), 707–723. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10551-016-3363-8

I chose this source due to its quantitative analysis of organization culture and its effects. The source studies a Finnish group of managers working in technical and commercial fields. The study analyzes the attributes linked to managers not leaving which are all indicators of a healthy organizational culture. They also examined the reasons for managers leaving which were all indicators linked to an unhealthy organizational culture. This further proves my thesis that identifying problems in organizational culture is the easiest way to find solutions.

Mercadal, T. (2018). Organizational culture. In Salem Press Encyclopedia. Salem Press. Retrieved from http://ezproxy.umuc.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=ers&AN=94895786&site=eds-live&scope=site

I will most likely be using this source to form an introductory portion of what organizational culture is. The source is no more than one year old and is derived from Salem Press Encyclopedia that is known for their scholarly articles. The introductory portion I plan on incorporating into my final paper will be an overview of organizational culture’s origins, as well as the shared values, beliefs, understandings, and human behaviors that form organization culture. It is supplemental in understanding why organizational culture is a driving force in an organizations ability to identify its efficiencies or inefficiencies.

Davis, R., & Cates, S. (2018). The Implementation of the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument in Creating a Successful Organizational Cultural Change. International Journal of Business & Public Administration, 15(1), 71–94.

In the international Journal of Business & Public Administration Russel Davis and Steven Cates conducted a study of the organizational culture assessment instrument. This is an instrument that aids in identifying current and preferred cultural dimensions. Although many studies of organizational culture have been conducted, rarely do they identify the change that occurred. This study does two things in relation to my paper. It proves that there are mechanisms specifically for identifying cultural dimensions and that organizational culture plays a significant role in an organizations success

Landry, S., Bisson, K., Cook, C., & Morrison, L. (2018). How a Culture of Kindness Can Improve Employee Engagement and Patient Experience -- and Five Ways to Get There. Nursing Leadership (1910-622X), 31(3), 42–47.

How a Culture of Kindness Can Improve Employee Engagement and Patient Experience is a source from the Nursing Leadership academic journal that has been peer reviewed. I plan to use this source to give the reader a specific example of how intentionally changing the organizational culture had a positive impact on an organization. The source explains the methods of how an organization implemented elements of kindness to produce employee engagement; which lead to an overall improvement of patient experience. The organizational culture was implemented from leadership to the employees, with the patients being the ultimate beneficiaries.
