The purpose of this paper will be to identify an area in behavior analysis that may createethical concerns for a population. Examples include: the use of restricted interventions with people with dev

This writing assignment will give you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts learned across the course in the context of a position paper on a topic about ethics related to treatment selection and behavior analysis. At least one peer-reviewed journal article must be used to support your position (the article CAN NOT be from the class readings that was used in class, it CAN NOT be a magazine article, web page, or article that comes from a non-peer reviewed journal). This must be an article that is selected in addition to the article than was used in your group presentation (for the group presentation the group can share the article they found, for the final paper a new article must be found and can be used along with the original article). If you were unable to find an article related specifically to the treatment you should contact your professor for assistance.

For the purposes of this paper assume that the treatment you selected for the Baloney detection project does not have an evidence base to support its use with individuals with ASD.

Your paper should include the following information:

  1. A title page in APA format (do not give me a fancy WORD title page)

https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

  1. You must use/refer to a peer-reviewed journal article in your paper to support your ethical dilemma and the article HAS to relate to your ethical dilemma.

    1. You will lose points if

      1. the article is not peer-reviewed,

      2. the actual article is not uploaded to D2L with your final paper,

      3. and/or does not relate to the ethical dilemma you are writing about.

      4. Do not give me abstracts or URL links in lieu of the article

  2. You should identify if there is an ethical dilemma related to a BCBA clinician using the treatment you selected for your Baloney Detection Group Presentation to treat a client on your caseload with ASD. You should respond to this as a clinician and not as a researcher.

    1. If there is an ethical dilemma with a BA recommending or using the treatment you should explain what it is and identify why it is problematic. Cite sections of the code as necessary (code number, sub code, and actual code) and how they apply to this situation. Must cite at least 2 codes.

    2. If there are no ethical problems related to using this treatment explain your reasoning and cite sections of the code as necessary (code number, sub code, and actual code) and how they apply to this situation. Must cite at least 2 codes.

  3. Identify a reason why the BA may engage in the unethical behavior.

    1. Explain the contingencies that would be in place that would lead the BCBA to engage in unethical behavior related to using/not using this treatment.

    2. Identify what ethical codes are relevant to the ethical issue you came up with (code number, sub code, and actual code)? This may or may not be different from the codes identified in #3 i.e., the reason using a non-evidence based treatment is unethical may be different than the reason a BA may use the treatment.

  4. Identify a reason a BCBA may engage in ethical behavior related to using this non-evidence based treatment (for example, why would a behavior analyst refuse a non-evidence based treatment such as facilitated communication)

    1. Identify what contingencies would be in place that would lead the BCBA to engage in ethical behavior related to using/not using this treatment.

    2. Identify what ethical codes are relevant to the ethical issue you came up with (code number, sub code, and actual code)?

  5. You should identify the reinforcers related to each contingency above. The reinforcers you identify for engaging in the ethical and unethical behavior HAVE to relate to the BCBA’s behavior. Clients, doctors, parents, etc., do not have to follow our ethical codes, so writing about their inappropriate behavior will result in a loss of points on the paper.

  6. Describe how the ethical dilemma you identified in #4 could be resolved or avoided.

  7. All references to other people’s work (including web pages, magazine articles, journal articles, books, the BACB ethics code, etc.) should be cited using APA citations.

    1. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/ & https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/03/

    2. If you copy, verbatim, an ethical code you must use APA citations as appropriate and quotation marks.

    3. While it is understandable that you may quote an Ethics code (although it is not necessary); most of your paper should not be direct quotations. Your paper should be written by you, not someone else.

  8. A reference page in APA format

    1. A copy of every article (in PDF format) you cite on the reference page must be turned in with the paper or points will be deducted. Links to the article, abstracts of the article, and anything that is not the actual article will not be accepted and will result in a loss of points

    2. No reference page will result in a ZERO for the paper. You had to have read someone else’s work to write your paper, you did not come up with anything on your own.

The paper should be no longer than 5 pages (not including the title and reference page). The paper must be typed, in essay format using APA styling for the paper, citations, and references, and be submitted via Desire2Learn. Excessive plagiarism (more than 2 sentences) will result in a 0 on the final paper. All work should be cited and referenced using APA format.

**your paper will be required to be submitted a week before the final due date so you have time to review any plagiarized material and make the necessary changes. Failure to complete this step will result in a 10 point deduction from your final paper.

Any papers submitted after the deadline will result in a 10-point deduction every day. 1 minute late is considered after the deadline.

See below for rubric for the Final paper.

Final Paper (60 points) Papers must be typed or they will not be accepted.
