Instructions

  • This is a formal research essay in which you are asked to perform formal research (either online or through the library) and synthesize an arguable claim over a primary text(s).

  • You will choose a primary text(s) to engage with critically in your essay. The choice of primary text is up to you (please look at the Be mindful of the length of the essay when choosing your topic; a film might be manageable but a whole season of a TV show might be beyond the scope of this essay.

  • Apart from your primary source(s) (a film, short story(ies), novel, video game, TV show episode(s), graphic novel, song/music video, etc.) you will also be asked to engage with at least five secondary sources. Your five secondary sources can include: reputable academic articles, a chapter/essay from a textbook/collection (this can include Gothic and The Cambridge Companion to the Modern Gothic), a reputable website (ending in .org, .net, or .edu), or an instructive YouTube video (like a TedTalk, a class lecture, or a well-researched video essay or podcast).

  • You will engage with your primary text through one or two of the following lenses: gender, sexuality, monstrosity, queerness, age, affect, class, society, identity, technology, narratology, geographically, Modern, Classic, ecocritically, globally, genre/genre conventions, historically, media, medium, culturally, etc. In addition to these lenses, you can also refer to the list in the Essay #2 Prompt or the Notes and Presentations in D2L for specific concepts/terms to use in your analysis.

  • You will use one or two of these lenses to interpret, analyze, and argue a claim using a primary text(s) and secondary text(s). Illustrate that you can apply the concepts discussed this semester within a written context. Illustrate your improved writing and reading skills that you have honed during this semester. You should demonstrate your ability to place yourself in dialogue with multiple texts and organize a cogent argument and interpretation.

Other items to keep in mind:

Context:

  • You will also need to establish context for your essay. Some of the types of contexts you can incorporate in your paper could be: historical, social, cultural, generic, theoretical, political, literary, technological, etc. These contexts function to place your argument within an already-established conversation or academic discussion. Context is important because your readers need to understand where your essay is placing itself in the conversation but also who has discussed this topic before, what is the major research that has been done, what factors are important in understanding/constructing the argument/interpretation, etc.

  • Another thing to consider is the amount of scholarship that has been previously established on the topic; some texts are more researched than others and thus easier to work on.

  • Remember that you should consider the type of Gothic you are working with: Classic Gothic or Modern Gothic. The reason for this distinction is because you do not want to project a Modern reading on a Classic text because that ignores relevant contexts within the argument. For example, if you are talking about Frankenstein by Mary Shelley in terms of Modern science, it ignores historical lenses present at the time that might have shaped the content/perception of the book when it was written; Victorian scientists were still in the early stages of scientific inquiry at that time.

Format Reminders:

  • Stay within the present tense.

  • Do not use citation generators.

  • Do not use contractions.

  • You must also make sure to cite your primary text along with your secondary text

  • You can include subheaders throughout your essay if you feel that it would help with organizing your main points. Be mindful, however, if you choose to include subheaders, that your essay remains cogently connected to your argument and purpose.
