Psychology Research Paper -Topic of Interest-4 Pages minimum (100 points)

Search a journal database, such as Mascomplete or Library catalog, to find articles on your subject. Once you have located an article, look at the reference section to locate other studies cited in the article. As you take notes from these articles, be sure to write down where you found the information. A simple note detailing the author's name, journal, and date of publication can help you keep track of sources and avoid plagiarism. While selecting a topic from among the different topics discussed this semester, you need to find out your area of interest. You would need to read a lot of content for writing your psychology research paper, which is why you should choose a topic that excites you.

The majority of the psychology sub-fields are quite broad, which makes researching on it extremely problematic. This is why it is best to choose a concise and narrow topic, so you can conveniently research on it. For example, memory is a huge topic and you cannot easily write a paper on it without discussing the different aspects involved in it. You can narrow down this topic to something like ‘how is the memory affected by age or gender?’ Topics like these make the research paper quite specific and interesting.

Here are some ideas for psychology research topics that might help you out.

  • Understanding the situations that lead to suicidal behaviors

  • Understanding schizophrenia in young men and women

  • Symptoms, reasons of stress and how to manage it

  • Impact of social anxiety disorder on the routine life of the affected person

  • Importance of imparting sexual education to children

  • Mental development and understanding of mentally challenged children

  • Relationship between stress and physical illness

  • Understanding and controlling teenage suicide

  • How does sports psychology help promote mental health in different workplaces?

  • What are the reasons behind long lasting marriages?

  • Is it important to have school uniforms?

  • The effect of different phobias on your personality

While going through psychology research topics, remember to opt for one that falls within the area of your interest.

Basic structure for your research paper

If you are writing a research paper, there are a number of things that you need to be paying attention to. Structure is one of them. The structure of a research paper is rather basic, and you can use this layout for any type of essay as well. All papers should have three parts; an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Here is the most common way that people put together their research papers:

Introduction:

  • General Statement about the topic, used to draw people into what you are writing about.

  • Main arguments that the paper is exploring.

  • Thesis statement, which is the information that you are trying to prove through your paper. It needs to be the idea that controls your entire paper; what you say will influence that research that you use in the paper. It explores a major idea and is very specific.

Body:

  • Literature review – This is the part of the paper where you are exploring the research that has already been done about this particular topic. Remember, it doesn’t have to be exact; you can talk about research that explores things related to the topic as well, if you explain your logic.

  • Methodology- This is the part of the paper where you talk about the way that you went about your own research and how you are going to explore the thesis statement that you made in your first paragraph.

  • Results – This, implying that you have actually performed the research that you said you were going to perform, talks about the results of that research.

  • Discussion – This part of the paper is where you explore the results and talk about the implications that the results have upon the entire body of research which existed (which you discussed in your Literature review)

Conclusion:

  • General statement about the topic and ending thoughts about the topic at hand.

  • Complete summary of the main points that were used to prove the thesis statement

Reference Section: Provide list of references for your paper (Minimum -four references)

Tips to Remember When Writing for Psychology

: • Try to be as unbiased as possible.

• Use past tense (because you should have already completed the study).

• Avoid passive voice. Always use active voice. Don’t write: “It was found that…” Write: “Smith (1993) found that…”

• Avoid wordiness. Say what you need to say as concisely as possible. Don’t write: “In his study, which was performed in 1993, Smith was surprised to find that…” Write: “Smith (1993) found that…”

• Do not use slang. • Avoid excessive use of the terms “I”, “me”, and “my” as well phrases like "I feel" or "I think".

• Use transition sentences, especially in your Lit Review. • And finally, it is always helpful to read your paper out loud.
