Epidemiological Event: Impact and Assessment

Known foodborne disease are estimated to cause approximately 9.4 million illnesses each year in the United States (Dewey-Mattia, Manikonda, Hall, Wise, & Crowe, 2018). A foodborne disease outbreak is defined as “the occurrence of two or more cases of a similar illness resulting from the ingestion of a common food” (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018, p. 1). During 2009-2015, The Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System (FDOSS) received reports of 5,760 outbreaks that resulted in 100,939 illnesses, 5,699 hospitalizations, and 145 deaths within the United States (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018). The norovirus was the most common cause of outbreaks (1,130) (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018). The most incidence of foodborne disease outbreak occurred in Ohio (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018).

Host, Agent, and Environmental Factors

A foodborne disease outbreak occurs when contaminated food is ingested by a person. As stated the most common was norovirus, followed by Salmonella (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018). Restaurants were the most common location of outbreaks, followed by catering or banquet facilities and private homes. The food category that was responsible for the most outbreak-associated illnesses were chicken, pork, and seeded vegetable (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018). The most common reason for an outbreak was because the food was not prepared properly (raw). The reason for outbreak is because it may have been contaminated by bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Health Disparities

A foodborne disease usually breaks out in certain areas, making geography the only health disparity. Typically, exposure in multiple states, reflects factors such as geographical distribution of the implicated food and the characteristics of the pathogens involved (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018). Everyone consumes food so there is not much disparity. However, when an outbreak does occur, it usually spreads within an area. The most outbreak incidence occurred in 2015 (Dewey-Mattia et al., 2018).

Thoughts About the Event

Foodborne disease outbreaks are a big issue in the United States. It hospitalizes many people and can even lead to death, depending on the pathogen involved. People need to more well educated on how to properly prepare food. If some of these foods were prepared properly, the outbreaks could have been avoided. Even though most people know that they should not consume raw foods, they still sometimes do. An example of this is a lot of people consume raw cookie dough. These people just need to be re-educated on the implications that may occur if they eat raw foods.
