DESCRIPTION OF THE PATIENT

Harvey is a 56-year-old man who has come to see you because he has been short of breath and dizzy on occasion. Harvey is 50 pounds over his ideal body weight. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall. Harvey is worried about his health right now. His father died at 60 of a heart attack. His mother died at age 62 of a stroke.

Most of Harvey's weight is in his mid-section. He tells you that the shortness of breath is getting worse and that he has been dizzy on two occasions last week. Harvey does not like physical activity, but he believes that he should start right away with a very extreme running program so that he can lose weight and "get better."

Harvey has two college-aged daughters, one of whom is getting married after graduation in six weeks. Harvey's wife is very upset with him for gaining so much weight, and he is embarrassed about it.

Harvey loves steak. He likes to have a baked potato with the steak. And Harvey has a taste for beer, which he has every night (two beers a night).

Harvey wants to know if you can give him a diet that will let him lose 20 pounds by his daughter's wedding. He is not interested in going slowly either with exercise or diet.
