Recap:Write an argumentative research paper on a managed care-related topic, assumption or myth; thoroughly explaining what it is, why it's important, and how it fundamentally impacts the managed care
Technology and Privacy of Health Information
Topic
- Technology has been a factor that has enhanced and improved the healthcare sector. However, there has been a very high and serious effect of technology on the health information which has put the privacy of patients at a risk. This paper will intensively look at the nature of privacy that is at risk as well as the ways the privacy is not upheld.
- How much impact has technology had on healthcare has it made things more complicated or easier for patients and Physicians?
- There have been some improvements to being able to easily obtain most medical records.
- Technology has improved efficiency with the quality of care being provided.
- When information is being released electronically how is it putting patient information at risk?
- A file can be uploaded and transferred to the incorrect provider.
- Incorrect files can be sent which can lead to mistakes being made and or mis diagnoses.
- Issues with the IT department can lead to more problems for patients.
- If backups are not properly performed and data mishap happens files can be lost and or corrupted.
- Medication for patients can be incorrectly prescribed if records are mixed up.
- System crashes/ outages can occur.
- Although security exists in the healthcare world there is still always an opportunity for passwords and private information being stolen.
- Although technology has helped in improving modern healthcare there are still concerns for patient information being put as risk.
- Information can be entered incorrectly since technology is relying solely upon the person entering the information.
- Healthcare organizations are required to have proper security in place, but the potential is there for health information to fall into the hands of the wrong people.
- The security risks surrounded by healthcare organizations are not always high risk.
- Changes and security are to be updated and need to follow the federal regulations that are in place.
- Example
- With improving technology does it makes privacy information of patient safer.
- The goal of improving technology in healthcare is to make information available more accurately and quick.
- The organizations are trying to become quicker and faster when treating patients.
- Healthcare organizations are governed by law to protect the health information of patients.
- Some providers are not always constantly keeping up to date with updates and malware that should be updated to help keep the healthcare information of their patients safe.
- Organizations failing to abide by these regulations if caught could be fine
- HIPPA was put in place to help enforce the protection of patient’s health information.
- Although these systems exist there are some providers who still violate the privacy of their patients.
- These laws are used to encourage proper handling of patient’s health information, but they are not 100% effective. A Nurse can walk a from a screen and not intentionally but may forget to close her screen while a patient’s information is left visible to others.
- Technology in healthcare was made to bring about a better change to patients and provides.
- With these changes we still face many challenges. With improvements constantly being made we still don’t know if the impact has technology in healthcare has it making things more complicated or easier for patients and Physicians? We are still facing risk associated with technology and with laws in place to help with the protection of health information there are still issues we face within the organization.
