General Motors

General Motors’ corporate mission has a single purpose “to earn customers for life by building brands that inspire passion and loyalty through not only breakthrough technologies but also by serving and improving the communities in which we live and work around the world.” General Motors’ corporate vision statement is “to become the world’s most valued automotive company.

General Motors training and development policy seems to neither really support nor be in conflict with the mission statement. General Motors main focus seems to be on the financial state of the business, as it pertains to, their stakeholders and success of the business. According to CEO Mary Barra, General Motors (GM) is working toward a company that all stakeholders value. This will be done by create a promise to:

  • We are committed to safety in everything we do.

  • We earn customers for life.

  • Our brands inspire passion and loyalty.

  • We translate breakthrough technologies into vehicles and experiences that people love.

  • We create sustainable solutions to improve the communities in which we live and work.

Mrs. Barra also goes on to say General Motors core values are the customers, relationships, and excellence. General Motors acts with integrity and take responsibility for results. They are focused on doing the right thing.

CEO Mary Barra, does speak on an internship program called GM student Corp and how they strive to train students and young people. General Motors has a volunteer employee program for high school students. They pay their employees salaried rates. She also goes on to speak about globalization and how they train their employees to help them acquire and keep updated skills for the success of the economy. But, they never really speak about how they take pride in providing top of the line training for their employees as a means of delivering exceptional quality products and services.

General motors speaks on how well the business is doing and how they want to assure value to their stakeholders. General motors also speaks on delivering exceptional products and services to their customers; who they want to keep for a life time. But, they do not really speak on how they training and treat their employees. I really didn’t see anything that went in detail to discuss how they take pride, in regards to, their employees on training and developing to product the exceptional products and services being offered. General motors didn’t speak about caring for the safety of their employees nor what they do for their employees to assure they are delivering top of the line products and services. The CEO Mary Barra did, however, speak on how they have Directors, who were committee to overseeing the principles of environment integrating, social and govern principles.

General Motors training and development policy that seems to support the mission statement. GM and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra, GM is dedicated to empowering a diverse and inclusive workplace that values the contributions of all employees. In 2016 3,000 employees took advantage of their tuition assistance programs, and 800 more participated in the well-established technical and professional education programs. General Motors in the midst of transforming how their customers get from point A to point B with rapid technological advancements.

When a company such as General Motors implements a training and development program that supports their mission statement and vision, the results are nothing but positive. Once of the most significant results to this is the company can increase its competitive advantage? In order to reduce competition of rivals, company’s need to develop a training program that will expand their brand into new business opportunities. General Motors has done this by announcing that it will make a huge push to train engineers. In order for them to gain customers for life by building automobiles with breaking technology, they have identified a shortage in computer coders and engineers. General Motors will not only specifically target potential candidates as engineers, but they will implement specific skill-based training within the company. In addition, they have announced they will work with outreach groups like Code.org to train teachers in computer engineering in an effort to reach middle school through high school aged students in hopes that they will also take an interest in computer engineering. Having a training and development that supports your mission statement and vision also gives the company the ability to meet its needs. In today’s business world company’s need to make sure that all facets of their business are running efficient and in the most cost-effective manner as possible. General Motors has laid out a specific strategy to accomplish this and when trainees have a clear understanding of what is to be achieved, the training is effective and leads to employees that are efficient. It also reduces wasted resources because the training has a clear concise direction. It is clear that General Motors has implemented a training and development program that not only supports its mission statement, but increases its competitive advantage as well as holds up its end of the promise of earning customers for life.

Walmart

The first Walmart store opened in Rogers, AR in 1962 by Sam Walton. Mr. Walton’s mission statement at that time was, “The lowest prices anytime, anywhere.” Mr. Walton who passed in 1992 stated, “If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone…we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what it’s like to save and have a better life.” The mission statement of Walmart today in the year 2018, is “We save people money, so they can live better.”

Between the years of Mr. Walton’s last statement and today’s mission statement, there have been controversies surrounding the statement “live better” when the criticisms of very low wages of Walmart employees and the long-term effects of the company’s continued large-scale sales of cheap and sometimes hazardous imported goods.

In 2013, Walmart pleaded guilty to improperly dumping hazardous waste in California and Missouri paying almost $82 million in fines. They were also charged with six counts of violating the Clean Water Act in California and one count of pesticide disposal in Missouri. Upon investigation, Walmart workers tossed products like bleach and fertilizer into the local trash and sewer system instead of treating them as hazardous waste. In 2006, the company put a program in place telling employees how to handle waste and created a compliance office.

The training and development at Walmart didn’t have the proper training in place for workers who would be dealing with hazardous materials. The company states that part of their training includes work/task analysis which is used for understanding specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required to fulfill jobs. Because hazardous waste material disposal was not included in the knowledge and abilities training it cost the company millions of dollars in fines.

The company’s training and development follows the Kirkpatrick Hierarchical Model for evaluating training programs. The Human Resource Management (HRM) goals are cost-effective high-performance training to maximize employee productivity. According to the company website the company has established the Walmart Academy that is located in or near a Supercenter where their front-line hourly supervisors, department managers, assistant managers receive two to six weeks of training. This training helps their associates look forward to advancement in the company. As stated on their corporate website, “Innovative thinking. Leadership through service. And above all, an unwavering commitment to saving people money. It’s what makes us the business we are today and shapes the company we will be tomorrow.

Walmart was intended to provide low prices to their customers against other retailers that would charge higher prices for profit. The store was started in order to cut the costs to consumers to get items needed without feeling they are paying too much. Over time, the business has grown to be international and is the go to store for nearly everyone in the United States of America. Wal-Mart was known for selling household items, clothes, shoes, and other needed equipment. They later decided to expand into grocery as well creating “Super Wal-Mart” which merged the grocery with everything else in one store. Wal-Mart has become one of the most common retailers and is steadily growing. Even though they have a very strong consumer base, competition has revealed itself in many different store types, mainly online. Wal-Mart have to do more than provide low prices to beat out their competition. This has been Wal-Mart focus to make sure they stay competitive other areas lack the same focus including properly training its employees to coincide with Sam Walton’s vision. Although Walmart vision seemed to have deteriorate they do however have Walmart Academy. Walmart Academy open in 2016 with an attempt to train prospective managers and supervisors not on Sam Walton’s but also service to the employees and customers. This is great for Walmart and the consumer, the hope is the training will also be given to the hourly employees as well.
