Inmate Sick Call Procedure

Population

A locked box labeled “Sick Slips” is located next to the officer’s station in each general population housing unit.

Sick slips are available next to the “Sick Slips” box.

Inmates may fill out a sick slip and deposit it into the locked Sick Slips box.

A nurse from the Health Service Unit will collect sick slips at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

A nurse will triage the sick slips to determine if inmates should be scheduled for an appointment in the Health Service Unit or if they need to be seen immediately.

Within 48 hours, each inmate submitting a sick slip shall be brought to the Health Service Unit, for evaluation, or a notation shall be made in the medical record indicating why such a medical visit was unnecessary.

Administrative Confinement

A nurse shall make rounds in the Administrative Confinement unit on the 7-3 shift and 3-11 shift.

The nurse making rounds will stop at each cell to provide each inmate the opportunity to communicate any medical concerns.

Based upon the medical complaint, and personal observation, the nurse making rounds shall make the determination if an inmate must be seen in the Health Service Unit immediately, or if he/she may be scheduled within the next 48 hours.

Documentation

All sick slips shall be filed in the inmate’s medical folder. Each sick slip shall be filled out and signed by a member of the medical staff, indicating what action was taken.
